Non-bonded direct exporters struggle to source raw material: Trade bodies want continuation of utilisation permission A good number of direct garment exporters are facing difficulties in producing their goods as they are failing to source raw materials from local suppliers because of not having bonded warehouse licenses. Customs Bond Commissionerate, both in Dhaka and Chattogram, has recently stopped issuing utilisation permission (UP) to the direct exporters, who don't have bonded warehouse licenses against their purchases of raw materials, goods and dyed and finished yarn for sweater, from deemed exporters who have bond licenses.  BGMEA, BKMEA, and BTMA on May 02 in a joint letter to the Customs Bond Commissionerate raised the issue. The trade bodies urged the bond commissionerate to continue issuing the utilization permission (UP) to non-bonded direct exporters against their purchases of all goods and services from deemed exporters who have bond licenses.

BD urged to ratify ILO Convention 190: Ending workplace violence Bangladesh should set a stipulated time to ratify the ILO Convention 190 to rid the workplace of harassment and violence, speakers said during a webinar on Wednesday. They suggested that the government consult employers, workers and civil society for the endorsement. Excepting sectors like ready-made garment and pharmaceuticals, they said, some industries in both formal and informal sectors need further improvement in workplace conditions before ratifying the convention. The observations came at a virtual event styled 'Workplace Harassment and ILO Convention 190' co-hosted by Unnayan Shamannay (UnSy) and CARE Bangladesh.

প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যয় মেটাতে পারছেন না ৮৬% মানুষ করোনার অভিঘাতে দেশের আর্থসামাজিক কাঠামোর দুর্বলতা আরও প্রকট হয়েছে। কাজ হারানো কর্মজীবী অনেকে কাজ ফিরে পেলেও তাদের আয়ের ক্ষয় পূরণ হয়নি। ক্ষুদ্র ও কুটিরশিল্পের বড় একটা অংশ দেউলিয়া। রপ্তানিপণ্যের দর কমেছে। পুষ্টিকর খাদ্যগ্রহণ কমেছে অনেকের। স্কুল থেকে ঝরে পড়ার সংখ্যাও বাড়ছে। এতদিন যারা নিম্নমধ্যবিত্ত ছিল করোনার প্রকোপে তারাও নব্য দারিদ্র্য শ্রেণিতে পরিণত হয়েছে। গতকাল বুধবার এক সংলাপে এ বাস্তবতার কথা তুলে ধরেন অর্থনীতিবিদ, গবেষক, উদ্যোক্তা ও কর্মসংস্থান খাত বিশেষজ্ঞরা। বিজিএমইএর সহসভাপতি শহীদুল্লাহ আজিম বলেন, করোনায় ৭০ হাজার পোশাক শ্রমিক কাজ হারিয়েছে। তাদের আয় কমেছে এটা বাস্তবতা। তবে অনেকেই আবার কাজ ফিরে পেয়েছে।

LDC Graduation: High-level committee starts working on possible challenges A high-level committee has started working on a strategy and plan to overcome the possible challenges of Bangladesh’s graduation from the status of a least developed country. Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on April 26 formed the 22member committee, headed by principal secretary Ahmad Kaikaus, to prepare, plan, implement and monitor the tackling of possible challenges of Bangladesh’s LDC graduation. The committee sat in its first meeting virtually on Wednesday. Ahmad Kaikaus presided over the meeting, joining the Prime Minister’s Office. The meeting discussed the possible negative impacts on the country’s economy, socioeconomic and other areas, especially in export-oriented sectors like RMG and pharmaceuticals, during the post-graduation period.

Speakers: Need for framing pandemic-focused budget for FY22 Economists and business leaders at a webinar on Tuesday stressed the need for framing a budget for the next fiscal year (FY22) focused on the Covid-19 pandemic, prioritizing the health sector to mitigate the health-related risks, alongside sound macroeconomic management, widening social safety nets, raising the tax-GDP ratio and generating more employments. They also emphasized strengthening the ongoing vaccination program, carrying on necessary tax reforms as well as reducing the corporate tax rates, ensuring proper budget implementation and quality spending of development projects, addressing the livelihood issues in the context of pandemic, prioritizing the CMSMEs and bringing the education sector under the purview of the stimulus packages.

Business is typically not a zero-sum game; all the parties involved can be winners. Banking hours extended till 2pm The central bank has asked all the scheduled banks to extend the working period for customers by one hour before the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr festival, officials said. The banks have also been instructed to run operations on a limited scale during the government announced ongoing lockdown until May 16, they added. Transaction period has been re-fixed from 10:00am to 2:00pm, instead of 1:00pmset earlier, in each working day, according to a revised notification issued by the Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Wednesday.

পোশাক শিল্প এলাকায় ১০, ১২ ও ১৩ মে ব্যাংক খোলা ঈদের আগে তৈরি পোশাকশিল্পের শ্রমিকদের বেতন-ভাতা দেয়া এবং রপ্তানি বাণিজ্য অব্যাহত রাখার স্বার্থে রাজধানী ও আশপাশের এলাকায় অবস্থিত ব্যাংকের শাখা ঈদের আগে তিন দিন ১০, ১২ ও ১৩ মে (ঈদ হওয়া সাপেক্ষে) খোলা রাখার নির্দেশনা দিয়েছে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক। গতকাল বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের মহাব্যবস্থাপক আনোয়ারুল ইসলাম স্বাক্ষরিত একটি প্রজ্ঞাপন দেশে কার্যরত সব তফসিলি ব্যাংকের ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক/প্রধান নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তার কাছে পাঠানো হয়েছে। এতে বলা হয়েছে, ঈদের আগে তৈরি পোশাকশিল্পে কর্মরত শ্রমিক, কর্মচারী ও কর্মকর্তাদের বেতন, বোনাস ও অন্য ভাতা পরিশোধের সুবিধায় এবং রপ্তানি বাণিজ্য অব্যাহত রাখার স্বার্থে ঢাকা মহানগরী, আশুলিয়া, টঙ্গী, গাজীপুর, সাভার, ভালুকা, নারায়ণগঞ্জ ও চট্টগ্রামে অবস্থিত পোশাকশিল্প এলাকার তফসিলি ব্যাংকের পোশাকশিল্প-সংশ্লিষ্ট শাখা ও প্রধান কার্যালয়ের সংশ্লিষ্ট বিভাগ স্বাস্থ্যবিধি যথাযথভাবে পরিপালন নিশ্চিত করে ১০, ১২ ও ১৩ মে (ঈদ হওয়া সাপেক্ষে) খোলা রাখতে হবে।

এফবিসিসিআইয়ের সভাপতি হচ্ছেন জসিম ব্যবসায়ীদের শীর্ষ সংগঠন এফবিসিসিআইয়ের নির্বাচনে বিনা প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতায় সবাই পরিচালক নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন। পরিচালনা পর্ষদের নির্বাচনে গতকাল বুধবার পরিচালক পদে ৭৮ জন বিনা প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতায় নির্বাচিত হন। তফসিল অনুযায়ী, আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে এদিন নির্বাচিত পরিচালকদের নাম ঘোষণা করা হয়। এছাড়া এফবিসিসিআইয়ের সভাপতি হতে যাচ্ছেন বেঙ্গল গ্রুপের ভাইস চেয়ারম্যান মো. জসিম উদ্দিন।

Malaysia bans entry from Bangladesh, three other countries  After banning Indian nationals from entering Malaysia, the government today extended the ban to cover travellers from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the ban covered all categories of long-term social visit pass holders, business travellers and social visitors. "However, exemptions are given to holders of diplomatic and official passports as provided for under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961," he said in a statement today on the Movement Control Order (MCO), Conditional MCO (CMCO) and Recovery MCO (RMCO).

এসএমই ঋণ বিতরণ: পিছিয়ে পড়া উদ্যোক্তাদের অগ্রাধিকার করোনাভাইরাসের ক্ষতি কাটিয়ে উঠতে সরকারের প্রণোদনা প্যাকেজের আওতায় ৩০০ কোটি টাকা ঋণ বিতরণের ক্ষেত্রে পিছিয়ে পড়া উদ্যোক্তাদের অগ্রাধিকার দেবে এসএমই ফাউন্ডেশন। প্রণোদনা প্যাকেজের আওতায় গ্রামীণ উদ্যোক্তাগণ ৪ শতাংশ সুদে ঋণ পাবেন। গ্রাহক পর্যায়ে ঋণের পরিমাণ হবে সর্বনিম্ন ১ লাখ টাকা থেকে সর্বোচ্চ ৭৫ লাখ টাকা পর্যন্ত। গতকাল বুধবার ঋণ বিতরণ বিষয়ে সারা দেশের এসএমই অ্যাসোসিয়েশন এবং চেম্বারের উদ্যোক্তাদের সঙ্গে অনলাইনে মতবিনিময় সভায় এ কথা বলেন এসএমই ফাউন্ডেশনের ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক ড. মো. মফিজুর রহমান।
