BGMEA President Dr. Rubana Huq has been elected as the supplier representative at the Steering Committee of the Fashion Charter UNFCCC Fashion Charter for Climate Action for 2021-2022 for her continuous support and commitment to climate action.
As a steering committee member of this high-level board representing global fashion suppliers, Dr. Huq will be supporting the manufacturers toward meaningful actions across the world.
The Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action was launched at COP24 in Katowice, Poland in December 2018 with an aim to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
BGMEA signed the charter as a supporting organization back in 2019 with a commitment to support this global initiative and was actively engaged in all the global and national initiatives of this domain.
The Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action goes beyond industry-wide commitments. Work under Fashion Charter for Climate Action is guided by its mission to drive the fashion industry to net-zero Greenhouse Gas emissions no later than 2050 in line with keeping global warming below 1.5 degrees. It also includes a target of 30% GHG emission reductions by 2030 and a commitment to analyze and set a decarbonization pathway for the fashion industry drawing on methodologies from the Science-Based Targets Initiative.
The charter membership has grown to 117 brands, suppliers and retailers and 41 supporting organizations and it is steered by a committee composed of global sustainability leaders.
The plans of Working Groups will now be tailored to move from commitments to implementation and the newly formed Steering Committee will be crucial in helping prioritize and plan action-oriented projects from now to COP26 and beyond.
