BGMEA, BKMEA and BTMA demand uninterrupted gas supply

Garments and textile sectors on Tuesday urged the government to ensure uninterrupted gas supply to avoid disruption and hamper production.

Leaders of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) at a joint meeting held at the BKMEA came out with the demand.

The meeting was informed that production in export-oriented factories in some areas of
Dhaka, Narayanganj, Chittagong
, Gazipur, Ashulia and Savar are disrupted due to poor supply of gas. Disruption in production has posed a threat to the closer of the factories.

It was further informed that production of yarn and fabric came down to nearly half of their capacity. Some of the factories remained closed for the last couple of days due to scarcity of gas.

Expressing grave concern, the meeting viewed that several hundred factories will be closed down soon if the gas crisis is not resolved. That will result in thousands of workers out of job.

The factory owners alleged that it will be difficult for them to maintain the quality and standard of their products if the gas supply is not improved immediately.

BGMEA president Abdus Salam Murshedy, BKMEA president M Fazlul Haque and BTMA president Abdul Hai Sarker are among those who took part in the meeting.
