National Occupational Health and Safety Day-2017 was observed in Bangladesh on 28 April.
Marking the day, the Ministry of Labor and Employment organized a discussion at Krishibid Institution in the capital.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed, MP, addressed the discussion as chief guest and State Minister for Labor and Employment Md Mujibul Haque joined it as special guest. BGMEA President Md. Siddiqur Rahman also attended the program which was chaired by Labor and Employment Secretary Mikail Shipar.
In his address BGMEA President Md. Siddiqur Rahman said that Bangladesh RMG industry has made significant achievements in terms workplace safety.
He mentioned that building, fire and electrical safety inspections in the garment factories have been completed under three initiatives namely Accord, Alliance and National Action Plan. Around 70% of the findings in Accord factories and 72% of the findings in Alliance factories have already been fixed.
He also said BGMEA is working with ILO to provide training on occupational health and safety (OHS) to employees and workers in the garment factories. Besides, BGMEA is running a hospital and 12 health centers for RMG workers to provide them with free medical services.
