Sammilita Parishad leader Atiqul Islam has won the biennial elections of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, securing 21 out of 27 posts.
Two panels — Sammilita Parishad and Forum — contested the polls for 2013-14.
The Parishad won 15 of 20 posts in Dhaka and six of seven in Chittagong, said an election board official. The results were announced on Monday morning at the BGMEA office in Dhaka.
Islam, managing director of Islam Garments Ltd, will take over as the new BGMEA president on March 21 according to the trade body’s schedule.
Parishad’s rival Forum panel led by Rising Group Managing Director Mahmud Hasan Khan bagged five posts in Dhaka and one in Chittagong.
The elections were held on Sunday in Dhaka and Chittagong with a turnout of 88 percent, the highest in the trade body’s history.
A total of 2,812 out of 3,196 votes were cast in Dhaka and Chittagong, according to the election board data.
In the BGMEA election, voters pick a total of 27 directors — 20 from Dhaka and seven from Chittagong.
The elected directors will select a president and four vice-presidents. And the first vice-president will come from the Chittagong region.
