BGMEA Senior Vice President Highlights Urgent Need to Upgrade Ports for Enhanced Trade Competitiveness

BGMEA Senior Vice President Inamul Haq Khan participated in a roundtable discussion on “Challenges, Opportunities and Way Forward in Shipping and Logistics Landscape,” organized by The Financial Express at a city hotel recently.

In his remarks, Inamul Haq Khan pointed out that container handling at the country’s main seaport takes five to six days, whereas the global standard is one to two days. This often compels exporters to rely on costly air shipments to meet buyers’ deadlines, which significantly increases logistics costs.

He underscored the urgency of upgrading Chittagong Port to international standards to enhance the country’s trade competitiveness.

He also noted that Mongla Port, the second-largest seaport in Bangladesh, could play a vital role in reducing the pressure on Chittagong Port and aligning container handling times with global standard.
