BGMEA and BKMEA Call for Withdrawal of Decision to Impose Duty on Yarn Imports

Expressing concern over the negative impact of the decision to impose duty on yarn imports on the readymade garment (RMG) industry, BGMEA and BKMEA jointly organised a press conference. The press conference was held today (19 January 2026) at Hotel Sonargaon in Dhaka, where speeches were delivered by BGMEA Acting President Salim Rahman and BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem.

At the press conference, BGMEA Acting President Salim Rahman stated that at a time when the industry is already under severe pressure due to a global market slowdown, geopolitical instability, and the country’s internal energy crisis—a threefold challenge—the decision to impose duty on yarn imports would be self-destructive and harmful to the industry.

He further added that in order to maintain the country’s economic stability and preserve the international competitiveness of the readymade garment industry, the government must immediately withdraw the decision to impose duty on yarn imports. At the same time, the leaders expressed hope that the government would resolve the issue promptly through a tripartite meeting.
