RMG needs long-term support to recoup pandemic losses: Bangladesh Bank The readymade garment (RMG) sector needs to be supported in the long run to recover from the losses induced by the Covid-19 pandemic, says the Bangladesh Bank. In its Quarterly Review on Readymade Garments (RMG): October-December FY'21 published on Sunday, the central bank also recommends that the number of export destination countries be increased besides expanding the size and tenure of ongoing stimulus packages. The Bangladesh Bank observes that the current situation can be overcome by ensuring a safe working environment for workers and emphasizing product diversification.

দেশে দেশে আবার লকডাউন সংক্রমণ ঠেকাতে দেশে দেশে শুরু হয়েছে লকডাউন। জরুরি অবস্থা জারি করেছে অনেক দেশ। ইংল্যান্ড, ফ্রান্স, জার্মানি, ইতালি, সৌদি আরব, তানজানিয়া, পোল্যান্ড, ইউক্রেনসহ ইউরোপের অনেক দেশে লকডাউন ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে।আন্তর্জাতিক গণমাধ্যম সূত্রে জানা গেছে, ফ্রান্স, পোল্যান্ড এবং ইউক্রেনে লাখ লাখ মানুষের ওপর নতুন করে লকডাউন আরোপ করা হয়েছে। গত শনিবার থেকে পোল্যান্ড, প্যারিসসহ ফ্রান্সের কিছু অংশ এবং ইউক্রেনের রাজধানী কিয়েভে নতুন করে কড়াকড়ি আরোপ করা হয়েছে।

Germany, a key market and the largest economy in Europe, is forecasted to grow by 3.7 percent in 2021. In the US, the Federal Reserve has raised its growth forecast for the economy in the past two weeks and now expects its GDP to grow by 6.5 percent this year, up from 4.2 percent forecasted back in December. In these cases, we are seeing a "rebound" in growth on the back of 2020—that is, a sharp uptake in economic growth to partly offset the contraction of the previous year. Likewise, all are saying that growth will stabilise beyond 2021 and revert to its previous trajectory.

Mizoram wants to use Ctg port Mizoram, a northeastern state of India, wants to use Bangladesh's Chattogram port to increase bilateral trade, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said yesterday. "The Indian state wants to use the premier Bangladeshi port to increase trade with us." Munshi informed the media about the development after a meeting with R Lalthangliana, Mizoram's minister for health, education and commerce, at the secretariat yesterday. The Mizoram government has expressed interest to open four border haats so that the people in those areas can enjoy the benefits of bilateral trade, Munshi said. "We plan to open at least one border haat with Mizoram soon. I will visit the state next month and in May so that we can open the border haat," Munshi told reporters at a press conference.

Jordan keen on boosting ties with Bangladesh Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister Ayman Safadi yesterday said his country is interested in enhancing cooperation with Bangladesh to address regional challenges. "We also look forward to increasing cooperation and taking efforts to overcome regional challenges, including refugee (crisis) and fight against terrorism ...," said Safadi, also the foreign and expatriates minister, in a video message. On behalf of the king of Jordan, the recorded video message of the Jordanian deputy prime minister was broadcast at a function on the fifth day of the 10-day special programmes marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the golden jubilee of the country's independence.

ছুটি বা লকডাউন নয়, কঠোর নিয়ন্ত্রণ কৌশলেই সরকার করোনাভাইরাস সংক্রমণের দ্বিতীয় ঢেউ রুখতে কঠোর নিয়ন্ত্রণ কৌশলের দিকেই এগোচ্ছে সরকার। গতকাল রবিবার কঠোর নিয়ন্ত্রণমূলক পদক্ষেপ নিশ্চিত করতে স্বাস্থ্য মন্ত্রণালয় থেকে পাঁচটি মন্ত্রণালয়ে পৃথক পাঁচটি চিঠি পাঠানো হয়েছে। তবে কোনো ধরনের সাধারণ ছুটি বা লকডাউনের সিদ্ধান্ত হয়নি, আপাতত এমন কোনো পরিকল্পনাও নেই। স্বাস্থ্য ও পরিবার কল্যাণ মন্ত্রণালয়ের সেবা বিভাগের সচিব মো. আব্দুল মান্নান গতকাল সন্ধ্যায় কালের কণ্ঠকে এ তথ্য নিশ্চিত করেন। একই ধরনের কথা স্বাস্থ্যমন্ত্রী জাহিদ মালেকও গণমাধ্যমকে জানিয়েছেন।

উন্নয়নশীল বাংলাদেশ উদযাপন ২৭-২৮ মার্চ আগামী ২৭ ও ২৮ মার্চ উন্নয়নশীল বাংলাদেশ উদযাপন। সম্প্রতি প্রধানমন্ত্রীর কার্যালয় এই দুটি দিন উদযাপনের জন্য সব মন্ত্রণালয় ও বিভাগের কাছে চিঠি দিয়েছে। একই সঙ্গে উদযাপন আয়োজনের একটি রূপরেখা দিয়েছে। জানা গেছে, আগামী ২৭ মার্চ সকাল ১০টায় এই কর্মসূচির উদ্বোধন করা হবে। পাশাপাশি র্যালির আয়োজন থাকবে। নানা আয়োজনে অন্তর্ভুক্ত থাকছে আলোচনা সভা, উন্নয়ন বিষয়ক ভিডিও প্রদর্শনী, জাতির পিতার জীবনীর ওপর নির্মিত তথ্যচিত্র ও ভিডিও প্রদর্শনী। পাশাপাশি থাকবে সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান। এ ছাড়াও ‘রূপকল্প ২০৪১ : উন্নত ও সমৃদ্ধ বাংলাদেশ’ শীর্ষক সেমিনার, উন্নয়ন বিষয়ক কুইজ প্রতিযোগিতা ও উপস্থিত বক্ততা।

শিগিগরই চালু হবে ‘ইউএস-বাংলাদেশ বিজনেস কাউন্সিল’:মার্কিন রাষ্ট্রদূত বাংলাদেশে নিযুক্ত যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের রাষ্ট্রদূত আর্ল আর মিলার বলেছেন, এ দেশের উদ্যোক্তাদের সাহসী মনোভাব সামনের দিনগুলো বহির্বিশ্বে বাণিজ্য ও পণ্যের বাজার সম্প্রসারণে কার্যকর ভূমিকা রাখবে। তিনি জানান, বাংলাদেশে মার্কিন বিনিয়োগ ও বাণিজ্য সম্প্রসারণের লক্ষ্যে শিগিগরই ‘ইউএস-বাংলাদেশ বিজনেস কাউন্সিল’ চালু করা হবে, যার মাধ্যম মার্কিন উদ্যোক্তাদের নিকট এদেশে ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্যের সম্ভাবনা তুলে ধরা হবে। ঢাকা চেম্বার অব কমার্স অ্যান্ড ইন্ডাস্ট্রি (ডিসিসিআই) সভাপতি রিজওয়ান রাহমানের সঙ্গে বৈঠকে তিনি এ তথ্য জানান।

How and why is Bangladesh better off than Pakistan today? Bangladesh’s remarkable performance during the past decade could be gauged from the fact that it is no more among the least developing countries. The volume of Bangladeshi exports is twice as much as Pakistan’s and same is the case with its currency, taka, whose value has nearly doubled than that of Pakistan’s rupee. Bangladesh’s GDP growth rate is 7.9% unlike Pakistan’s 1.5%. The foreign exchange reserves held by Bangladesh are to the tune of $41 billion as against Pakistan’s $20 billion. Only on remittances, Pakistan is ahead of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is also ahead of Pakistan when ranked in terms of passport index, literacy ratio, micro-credit financing and women empowerment.
