BGMEA, Tonello to partner in promoting green technologies BGMEA to support the RMG industry in adopting innovative technologies and solutions for denim and garment washing, dyeing, and finishing to become more efficient and sustainable. During her latest mission to Bangladesh, Alice Tonello, Tonello's marketing and R&D director, met with Faruque Hassan, president of BGMEA, to forge an agreement to support the Centre of Innovation, Efficiency and OSH in Dhaka and make Bangladesh market increasingly technologically advanced and efficient in terms of environmental responsibility. The founder and CEO of the Bangladesh Apparel Exchange and Managing Director of Denim Expert Mostafiz Uddin and Maurizio Morosini, sales director at Tonello, were also present at the meeting held at BGMEA Complex on Monday.

BGMEA, Fashion Design Council to promote traditional Kahdi The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters (BGMEA) and the Fashion Design Council of Bangladesh (FDCB) intend to build collaboration to promote and develop high-end fashionable garments using home grown fabrics and materials. The willingness was expressed when FDCB President Maheen Khan and Vice President Emdad Haque met with BGMEA President Faruque Hassan at BGMEA Complex on October 17. They discussed how BGMEA and FDCB could work together to present Bangladeshi culture and fashion internationally and create a market for Bangladeshi products globally, especially Khadi, a hand-spun and woven natural fibre.

Cotton price fall ushers in hope among RMG exporters Despite low work orders and negative earnings, Bangladeshi apparel exporters remain optimistic as cotton prices are declining in the international market. According to Nasdaq, per pound cotton in the international market never exceeded $1 since September 19 this year while booking prices were $0.83 on Monday. Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Faruque Hassan told The Business Post the world is now facing high inflation, which is reducing consumers’ purchasing power. “This has caused export orders to fall, but low cotton prices in the global market will help us receive more orders.”

While the cost of doing business is on a continuous rise, electricity load-shedding is adding to that and eventually we are losing our competitiveness. After investing millions of dollars to ensure safety and sustainability in the garment factories, we are not being able to capitalize this benefit in this given situation. The RMG industry is essentially the bread and butter of this country, affecting the lives of approximately 5 crore people. The nations’ industries set their sights on higher levels of excellence by setting targets like $100 billion in exports and reaching 100% of the global market by 2030. Therefore, it is imperative that the government do the best they can to sustain this industry, and subsequently keep the wheels of our economy turning.

BD, Indonesia, Pakistan, Vietnam align on RMG chemical action Four Asian garment producing countries-Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan and Vietnam-have united to fight against pollution by reducing hazardous chemicals use in textile production that pose significant risks to human health and environment. The $43 million initiative will support businesses to manage risks to workers and eliminate the most toxic chemicals from their production processes, according to a UN Environment Programme (UNEP) statement issued on Friday.  The five-year programme will bring the four countries together to align public policy on the textile sector with international best practice, including on supply chain transparency, investment for chemical management and eco-innovation, and occupational health and safety, creating the enabling environment needed to phase out PFAS and other chemicals of concern, said the statement.

Bangladesh on course to be top RMG exporter in EU Experts and exporters said that Bangladesh would be the largest apparel exporter in the European Union within a few years as the export growth of the country was more than that of its major competitor China in the economic bloc. ‘Bangladesh has already secured the first position in exporting denim in the EU and hopefully the total apparel export to the market would exceed China within a few years,’ Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association president Faruque Hassan told New Age on Saturday. He said that the BGMEA was working to strengthen Bangladesh RMG sector through product and market diversification. ‘We are working to strengthen our non-cotton base with the aim of diversifying our products beyond five basic items (shirts, trousers, jackets, T-shirts and sweaters),’ the BGMEA president said.

Port activities delayed by NBR server glitch Shipping agents are facing difficulties in submitting the registration number and import general manifest (IGM) against their vessels due to a glitch in the related server of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), leading to delays in import-export activities. It is mandatory to submit the registration number and IGM for every vessel to be loaded or unloaded with goods at Chattogram port. NBR officials say the problem is only temporary though as the server is simply undergoing upgradation and will be back up soon.
