Fall in RMG work orders triggers domino effect
The country's accessories and packaging industry has started to feel the pinch as the local export-oriented garment sector has been experiencing a significant fall in work orders.
Industry insiders said they have been grappling with different issues, including delayed payment, deferred shipments of ready goods and banking complexities, in recent months.
BGMEA Vice President Md Shahidullah Azim said buyers are now asking for delaying their shipments citing huge inventory as demands have declined in western markets mainly because of high inflation and fuel price induced by Russia-Ukraine war. So the drop in work orders in the local RMG sector means the local accessories and packaging industry will see a decline in work orders too.

Trousers: The jewel in apparel crown
The simple step that Bangladesh took in the apparel trade four and a half decades ago has proven to be a giant leap as the country has emerged as the second-largest garment exporter globally after China. In 1978, Bangladesh started its journey with only a few thousand formal shirts. Today, the country is a dominant player in basic and low segments of the apparel value chain and is now marching ahead to capture more share of the value-added and high-end segments.

Our LDC graduation must go unhindered :Editorial
Bangladesh is on the precipice of achieving one of its biggest goals since our independence: Graduation away from being the least developed country (LDC) grouping.
Our country has been able to defy all odds and exceed all expectations in its march to becoming a middle-income nation, and although shedding our LDC status means new opportunities are in the offing for us it also means an entirely new set of challenges that we will need to contend with as we move forward.
