Power tariff hike will add to woes The decision to increase the wholesale price of electricity by 19.92 per cent to Tk 6.20 per unit has raised concerns among businesses who say consumers may soon have to bear the added burden. Faruque Hassan, president of BGMEA, said the higher wholesale price of electricity will ultimately pass onto the retail level."So, we will request the BERC not to increase it at retail level, especially for general consumers and industries," he added. Faruque then said there is a lot of system loss in electricity production as well as theft in meter reading. "There are many illegal electricity lines in many places and if the government is strict on these issues, the country's revenue will increase further," he said, adding that this would help cover the subsidies on energy.Nasrul Hamid, the state minister for power, energy and mineral resources, told reporters at the secretariat that the price of electricity and fuel is being adjusted all over the world due to a global rise in production costs. "But as the prices are not going to increase at the consumer level right now, people have nothing to worry about," he said.

Value addition in apparel products keeps falling According to a Bangladesh Bank report titled ‘Quarterly Review on RMG: July-September, FY22’, the value addition in RMG products dropped to 51.49 per cent in the first quarter of FY23. ‘The total unit price of apparel products increased on the global market, but the net export decreased due to high prices of raw materials and increased freight costs caused by the Russia-Ukraine war,’ BGMEA president Faruque Hassan told New Age on Monday. He said that although the global economy was going through turmoil, Bangladesh apparels sector was performing well.

আবারও দাম বাড়লে কারখানাগুলো বিদ্যুৎ বিল দিতে পারবে না বিজিএমইএ সভাপতি ফারুক হাসান ঢাকা পোস্টকে বলেন, রাশিয়া-ইউক্রেন যুদ্ধের কারণে ইতোমধ্যে গ্যাস-বিদ্যুতের সংকট বেড়েছে। বাড়তি দামেও আমরা বিদ্যুৎ পাচ্ছি না। বাধ্য হয়ে জেনারেটর দিয়ে কারখানা চালাচ্ছি। ফলে উৎপাদন খরচে দিন দিন বাড়ছে। তিনি বলেন, এখন নতুন করে বিদ্যুতের দাম বাড়ালে আমাদের উৎপাদন খরচ বাড়বে। এতে বিশ্ব বাজারের প্রতিযোগিতায় আমাদের টিকে থাকা কষ্টকর হবে। পাশাপাশি জিনিসপত্রের দাম হু হু করে আরও বাড়বে। জনমনে অসন্তোষ সৃষ্টি হবে। বিজিএমইএ’র সহ-সভাপতি ও ক্ল্যাসিক ফ্যাশন কনসেপ্টের এমডি শহীদউল্লাহ আজিম ঢাকা পোস্টকে বলেন, বিদ্যুতের দাম পাইকারিতে বাড়লে এর প্রভাব আলটিমেটলি আমাদের ওপরই পড়বে। সেক্ষেত্রে এখন না হোক, কিছুদিন পরে এটা আমাদের ওপরই আসবে। তিনি বলেন, আপাতত খুচরা পর্যায়ে না বাড়ালেও প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোতে দেখবেন বিদুৎ বিল বাড়িয়ে দেখাবে। বিভিন্ন চার্জ যুক্ত করবে। প্রভাবটা আমাদের ওপরই পড়বে।

RMG value addition drops as production costs rise Value addition in readymade garment product exports dropped to 51.39%, reaching $10,274.34 million, in the first quarter (July-September) of the current financial year, mainly owing to an increase in prices of raw materials in the global market. Khandoker Rafiqul Islam, vice president of the BGMEA said although the CM was the same, the price of raw material yarn or fabric for clothing is less than six months ago. As a result, if the products made from these raw materials are exported next January, the rate of value addition may increase at that time.

Ctg port container movement falls in October Movement of import and export-laden containers through the Chattogram port in October was lower both year-on-year and compared to that in the previous two months, reflecting a gradual slowdown in foreign trade amidst global economic downtrends. BGMEA Vice President Rakibul Alam, however, said garment shipments fell in last couple of months as consumers in export destinations have reduced purchases due to inflation and economic instability. Due to lesser orders being placed, most factories have reduced production durations by 30 per cent to 40 per cent, he said. Earlier factories used to remain open on at least two Fridays every month but now all factories remain closed every Friday, he said.

Bangladesh’s RMG industry ready for western climate policies: Altan Bangladesh will be able to take advantage of any climate policy the western nations adopt, because its readymade garment (RMG) industry has already began the transformation towards sustainability, said International Apparel Federation (IAF) President Cem Altan. Altan made the remark in an interview to The Business Post during his visit to Dhaka for attending the 37th IAF convention and Made in Bangladesh Week 2022, adding that Bangladesh’s ongoing sustainability policy in the apparel sector will be helpful in the future.

"You [Bangladesh] are already the leader in green factories. Become a world leader in due diligence as well and change the way Bangladesh is perceived on the international stage," Bernd Spanier, deputy head of mission of the EU Delegation to Bangladesh, said on Monday at a discussion held in the capital.

শিল্প খাতে গ্যাস ও বিদ্যুৎ সংকট: দ্রুত নিরসনের উদ্যোগ নিন শিল্প-কারখানায় বিপর্যয় নেমে এলে দেশের রপ্তানি খাত অনিশ্চয়তার মুখে পড়বে। এমনিতেই করোনার কারণে দীর্ঘদিন শিল্পকারখানা বন্ধ ছিল। বন্ধ থাকাকলীন গ্যাসের বিল বা জরিমানা মওকুফ হয়নি। এরপরও শিল্পমালিকরা ক্ষতি পুষিয়ে নেওয়ার আশায় বুক বেঁধেছিলেন। কিন্তু সে আশায় গুড়ে বালি। দেশে দীর্ঘদিন ধরে বিনিয়োগ পরিস্থিতি ভালো নয়। গ্যাস-বিদ্যুৎ পরিস্থিতির যথেষ্ট উন্নতি না হওয়ার কারণে অনেক উদ্যোক্তা বিনিয়োগ করেও উৎপাদনে আসতে পারছেন না। অন্যদিকে নতুন বিনিয়োগেও আগ্রহী হচ্ছেন না উদ্যোক্তারা। দেশের অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়নের ধারা অব্যাহত রাখতে সরকার গ্যাস ও বিদ্যুৎ সংকট নিরসনে কার্যকর পদক্ষেপ নেওয়ার পাশাপাশি এ খাতে শৃঙ্খলা ফিরিয়ে আনার উদ্যোগ নেবে, এটাই প্রত্যাশা।

রপ্তানির ৯০% ক্ষতি বাংলাদেশের বাংলাদেশসহ ১২টি দেশ এখন স্বল্পোন্নত দেশ (এলডিসি) থেকে উত্তরণের পথে রয়েছে। এ উত্তরণের ফলে এসব দেশ শুল্কমুক্ত বাজার সুবিধা হারাবে। এতে দেশগুলো রপ্তানিতে যে পরিমাণ ক্ষতির মুখে পড়বে, তার ৯০ শতাংশই হবে বাংলাদেশের। মূলত এলডিসি থেকে বের হলে প্রচলিত শুল্ক-কর দিয়েই ইউরোপ-আমেরিকার বাজারে পণ্য রপ্তানি করতে হবে। তাতে রপ্তানি কমতে পারে। গতকাল রোববার ‘ডব্লিউটিও-এমসি ১২ থেকে প্রাপ্তি: স্বল্পোন্নত দেশের তালিকা (এলডিসি) থেকে উত্তরণে পরবর্তী করণীয়’ শীর্ষক এক সংলাপের মূল প্রবন্ধে বিশ্ব বাণিজ্য সংস্থার (ডব্লিউটিও) উদ্ধৃতি দিয়ে এ তথ্য জানানো হয়েছে।

New German law to boost compliance in supply chain A new German due diligence law will come into effect from January next year, aiming to bind companies to ensure better human and labour rights in factories and supply chains, said an official of a German development agency. The law will be applicable for companies headquartered in Germany with at least 3,000 workers and violators may face a fine, have to remediate or be excluded from public tender, which will also ruin their reputation.Bangladeshi companies supplying goods to the violators will also face fines since they are a part of the supply chain, the official said.

National Export Trophy award ceremony today The government is set to distribute the National Export Trophy for fiscal year (FY) 2018-19 today (Tuesday). A total of 72 companies have been selected for the award for their outstanding contribution to the export sector, officials said. Rifat Garments Ltd. (Ha-meem Group) will receive "Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Exports Trophy" as the best exporter for the FY. The Ministry of Commerce and the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) jointly organised the award distribution ceremony at the Bangabandhu Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Centre at Purbachal, Dhaka this (Tuesday) afternoon.
