Apparel export to Japan may cross $2bn by 2025 According to a research of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Japan is going to be emerged a top most promising market in the coming years and following this, it has set a target of doubling the current export to Japan by 2025. “Achieving the target, the leaders of the BGMEA made several round trips to the country and exchanged views with its businesses along with product development,” BGMEA Vice-President Md Shahidullah Azim told The New Nation. Terming Japan a ‘specialized market,’ Abdullah Hil Rakib, Managing Director of Team Group, said Japanese buyers are very much conscious and focused on quality of product materials. “We have to have the proper mindset with the right business module to get into the market with a separate team and unit,” he explained.

পরিবেশবান্ধব শিল্পায়নে সরকারি প্রণোদনা চান ব্যবসায়ীরা টেকসই অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়নে পরিবেশ-প্রতিবেশ ও শিল্পায়নের মধ্যে ভারসাম্য বজায় রাখা একান্ত জরুরি। তবে পরিবেশবান্ধব শিল্পায়নে সরকারি প্রণোদনা দরকার। শনিবার রাজধানীর একটি হোটেলে আরণ্যক ফাউন্ডেশন আয়োজিত ‘ন্যাচারাল রিসোর্সেস কনজারভেশন: স্কোপ অব প্রাইভেট সেক্টর এনগেজমেন্ট’ শীর্ষক কর্মশালায় ব্যবসায়ী নেতারা এমন মত দেন। বিশেষ অতিথির বক্তব্যে বিজিএমইএর সহসভাপতি মো. শহীদুল্লাহ আজীম বলেন, বর্তমানে পরিবেশবান্ধব তৈরি পোশাকের জন্য আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রেতাদের কাছে বাংলাদেশ সবচেয়ে পছন্দের বাজার। বর্তমানে দেশে ১৯৫টি লিড সনদধারী পোশাক কারখানা রয়েছে।

How Japan can be a major trading partner for Bangladesh Bangladesh's bilateral trade with Japan has slowly increased over the decades. The country is the first choice of Bangladeshi exporters among non-traditional export destinations, especially for apparel exporters. Talking to Dhaka Tribune, Shahidullah Azim, BGMEA vice-president said that the demand for high-value products is high in Japan. To capture the Japanese market, they have to focus on manufacturing value-added products. Mohiuddin Rubel, additional managing director of Denim Expert Limited and a director of the BGMEA, told Dhaka Tribune that huge investment in research and development (R&D), maintaining shipment time and capturing the fast-changing fashion trends of Japan is a must to capture this market.

রপ্তানি আয় নিম্নমুখী, শঙ্কায় ব্যবসায়ীরা বিজিএমইএ’র পরিচালক ও মুখপাত্র মহিউদ্দিন রুবেল বলেন, রপ্তানিকারকরা বলে আসছিলেন যে, ইউক্রেন-রাশিয়ার যুদ্ধের প্রভাবে বিশ্ব অর্থনীতিতে মন্দাভাব এবং আমদানিকারক দেশগুলোর মূল্যস্ফীতির চাপের প্রভাব পড়বে রপ্তানিতে। কারণ মূল্যস্ফীতি বেড়ে গেলে ক্রেতাদের আমদানি কমে যাবে। অর্থাৎ বাংলাদেশের পোশাক খাতের রপ্তানি কমবে। তার কিছুটা চিত্র দেখা গেছে মার্চের রপ্তানি আয়ের হিসাবে। তবে মার্চে রপ্তানি কমলেও প্রতিযোগীদের তুলনায় বাংলাদেশ তেমন একটা পিছিয়ে নেই। আগামীতে রপ্তানি ঘুরে দাঁড়াবে বলে প্রত্যাশা করেন তিনি।

টেকসই শিল্পায়নে প্রণোদনা দাবি টেকসই অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়নে পরিবেশ-প্রতিবেশ ও শিল্পায়নের মধ্যে ভারসাম্য বজায় রাখা একান্ত জরুরি। এ লক্ষ্যে শিল্পায়ন পরিকল্পনায় পানি, বায়ু, বন-বাস্তুসংস্থানসহ প্রাকৃতিক সম্পদের সুষ্ঠু ব্যবহার নিশ্চিত করার প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছেন দেশের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বাণিজ্য সংগঠনের ব্যবসায়ী নেতৃবৃন্দ ও শীর্ষস্থানীয় শিল্পগ্রুপের কর্ণধাররা। তবে পরিবেশবান্ধব শিল্পায়নে সরকারি প্রণোদনার দাবি জানিয়েছেন ব্যবসায়ীরা।বিজিএমইএ’র সহ-সভাপতি মো. শহীদুল্লাহ আজীম বলেন, ‘বর্তমানে পরিবেশবান্ধব তৈরি পোশাকের জন্য আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রেতাদের কাছে বাংলাদেশ সবচেয়ে পছন্দের বাজার। বর্তমানে দেশে ১৯৫টি লিড সনদধারী পোশাক কারখানা রয়েছে। পরবর্তী প্রজন্মকে একটি পরিচ্ছন্ন পৃথিবী উপহার দিতে বিজিএমইএ ফোর আর তথা রিইউজ, রিডিউস, রিসাইকেল, রিকভার ধারণা বাস্তবায়ন ও তাপ ব্যবস্থাপনা নিয়ে কাজ করছে।’

শ্রমিকনেতাদের সমালোচনা করলেন শ্রম প্রতিমন্ত্রী মন্নুজান সুফিয়ান জাতীয় পেশাগত স্বাস্থ্য ও নিরাপত্তা দিবসের আলোচনা সভায় শ্রমিকনেতাদের সমালোচনা করলেন প্রতিমন্ত্রী বেগম মন্নুজান সুফিয়ান। তিনি বলেছেন, ‘আমরা শ্রমিকদের যেকোনো সমস্যার সমাধান, তাদের কল্যাণ এবং জীবনমান উন্নয়নে রাতদিন কাজ করছি। এরপরও কতিপয় শ্রমিকনেতা দেশের বিরুদ্ধে, সরকারের বিরুদ্ধে আন্তর্জাতিক শ্রম সংস্থায় (আইএলও) অভিযোগ দেন।’ শ্রম মন্ত্রণালয়ের সচিব মো. এহছানে এলাহীর সভাপতিত্বে সভায় আরও উপস্থিত ছিলেন শ্রম অধিদপ্তরের মহাপরিচালক খালেদ মামুন চৌধুরী, বাংলাদেশ এমপ্লয়ার্স ফেডারেশনের সভাপতি আরদাশির কবির, তৈরি পোশাকশিল্পের মালিকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএ পরিচালক মো. খসরু চৌধুরী, নিট পোশাকশিল্পের মালিকদের সংগঠন বিকেএমইএর সহসভাপতি মনসুর আহমেদ, জাতীয় শ্রমিক লীগের সভাপতি নুর কুতুব আলম মান্নান প্রমুখ।

Japan could be the next big RMG market Looking beyond what government can or should be doing to facilitate trade pact or status to help the industry, BGMEA(Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers' Export Association), the apex body of apparel manufacturers has been doing its part to get things moving in the right direction. Indeed, as pointed out by Mr. Asif Ashraf, Managing Director & CEO of Urmi Group, BGMEA launched a 'Made in Bangladesh' event to showcase for foreign customers how far the RMG sector had progressed, quality and the economies-of-scale on offer that couple quality and price back in November, 2022.

Trade bodies call for govt incentives to environ-friendly industries Business leaders said it is important to provide government incentives for environment-friendly industrialization with a view to sustainable development which requires maintaining a balance between the environment and industrialization. They reached this consensus at a workshop titled ‘Natural Resources Conservation in Bangladesh: Scope of Private Sector Engagement’ organised by the Arannayk Foundation held on Saturday in a city hotel. Md. Shahidullah Azim, Vice President of BGMEA said, Bangladesh is the most preferred market for international buyers of eco-friendly clothes and there are now 195 lead-certified garment factories in the country. As a responsible trade body, BGMEA is implementing Four R: Reuse, Reduce, Recycle, Recover concepts and also heat management to give a clean world to the next generation, he added.

Cash incentives for RMG accessories, packaging industries from FY24 The government is considering providing cash incentives to the garments accessories and packaging industry to help it grow further. The industry is likely to enjoy the incentive facility from the next FY24, sources said. The Ministry of Commerce (MoC) has recently written to the Ministry of Finance for providing the facility. It also suggested preparing a combined circular for the country's clothing sector.

LDCs want sub-provision with 6yr supportive measures Following severe interruption in development by Covid-19 pandemic and global economic headwinds, Group of Least Developed Countries (LDC Group) has proposed to provide effective support, including 6-year supportive measures, to the graduating countries in the period of transition. LDC Group made the second revision of the submission in this regard on December 5 last year. The communication was made from the office of Djibouti on behalf of the group.

Home textile’s fall from grace Momtex Expo, one of the largest home textile exporters in Bangladesh, witnessed tremendous export growth, earning $96 million last year despite the acute power and gas crisis, but it is now facing severe order shortages. Due to the domestic gas price hike by up to 179 per cent and the ongoing foreign currency shortages, the company’s production cost increased a lot. On the other hand, due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, most of Momtex’s export destinations are facing high inflation. That is why brands are placing fewer orders to Bangladesh’s home textile makers like Momtex. They are looking to Pakistan as an alternative sourcing hub due to lower costs.

এফবিসিসিআই পরিচালনা পর্ষদ: নতুন বিধিমালার আওতায় যেসব পরিবর্তন আসতে পারে দেশে ব্যবসায়ীদের শীর্ষ সংগঠন দ্য ফেডারেশন অব বাংলাদেশ চেম্বার অব কমার্স অ্যান্ড ইন্ডাস্ট্রির (এফবিসিসিআই) পরিচালনা পর্ষদ ছোট হয়ে আসছে। বর্তমানে ৮০ জনের পর্ষদ ৬৮ জনে নামবে। পাশাপাশি মনোনীত পরিচালকের সংখ্যাও ৩৪ থেকে কমে ৪ জন হবে। বাণিজ্য মন্ত্রণালয় প্রায় তিন দশক পর নতুন বাণিজ্য সংগঠন বিধিমালা করতে যাচ্ছে। খসড়া বিধিমালায় নতুন বাণিজ্য সংগঠন নিবন্ধন ও বিদ্যমান বাণিজ্য সংগঠন পরিচালনায় কিছুটা কড়াকড়ি আরোপের কথা বলা হয়েছে। একই সঙ্গে এফবিসিসিআইয়ের পর্ষদে সংস্কারের বিষয়েও উল্লেখ রয়েছে।

TRANSSHIPMENT: Ctg port ready to handle Indian cargoes The Chittagong Port Authority officials said that they had made all preparations for handling Indian transshipment goods through the port. ‘Two consignments of transshipment goods were experimentally handled in 2020 and 2022 through the port. We are now ready to handle the [transshipment] goods through the port as per rules and regulations,’ CPA secretary Mohd Omar Faruk told New Age on Saturday.

চলতি বছর বিশ্ববাজারে পণ্যমূল্য কমবে ২১ শতাংশ : বিশ্বব্যাংক বিশ্ববাজারে পণ্যমূল্য নিয়ে কিছুটা সুখবর দিল বিশ্বব্যাংক। টানা ছয় মাস বিশ্ববাজারে পণ্যের দাম নিম্নমুখী। বিশ্বব্যাংকের পূর্বাভাস অনুযায়ী এবছর গড়ে বিশ্ববাজারে পণ্যমূল্য কমবে ২১ শতাংশ। অবশ্য গতবছর ৪৫ শতাংশ বেড়েছিল পণ্যমূল্য। করোনা অতিমারির রেশ কাটতে না কাটতেই রাশিয়া-ইউক্রেন যুদ্ধ উসকে দেয় আন্তর্জাতিক পণ্যবাজার। শুধু জ্বালানির দামই নয়, পরিবহন খরচ বেড়ে যাওয়ায় প্রায় প্রতিটি পণ্যের দাম বাড়তে থাকে। বিশ্বব্যাংকের কমোডিটি মার্কেট আউটলুক প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়েছে, গত বছরের তুলনায় ২০২৩ সালে বিশ্ববাজারে পণ্যমূল্য কমতে পারে ২১ শতাংশ। পরের বছর অর্থাৎ ২০২৪ সালে গড় হিসাবে স্থিতিশীল থাকবে বলেও প্রত্যাশা করা হয়েছে।

Int'l trade unions push for due diligence legislation Trade union leaders from textile and garment sector in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Myanmar and Tunisia have called for mandatory and due diligence legislation and Europe's support to prevent the Rana Plaza-like tragedy. They made the call at a meeting with members of the European Parliament (MEPs) on Thursday, according to a statement. Accompanied by IndustriALL Global Union and IndustriALL Europe, Bangladesh Sammilita Garment Sramik Federation president Nazma Akter, Cambodian Apparel Workers' Democratic Union president Athit Kong, Tunisian Textile, Clothing, Shoes and Leather Federation general secretary Habib Hazami, and Industrial Workers Federation of Myanmar president Khaing Zar Aung attended the meeting.

যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নিষেধাজ্ঞায় বিপাকে ভিয়েতনামের পোশাক ও জুতাশিল্প চীনের জিনজিয়াং প্রদেশে উৎপাদিত পণ্য, বিশেষ করে তুলা আমদানিতে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের আরোপিত নিষেধাজ্ঞার প্রভাব পড়েছে ভিয়েতনামে। দেশটির তৈরি পোশাক ও জুতাশিল্পে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ক্রয়াদেশ কমে গেছে। যে কারণে গত অক্টোবর থেকে এখন পর্যন্ত ৯০ হাজার শ্রমিক কাজ হারিয়েছেন। যুক্তরাষ্ট্র দীর্ঘদিন ধরেই অভিযোগ করে আসছে, জিনজিয়াং প্রদেশে শ্রমিকদের দিয়ে জোরপূর্বক কাজ করানো হয়। প্রদেশটি মূলত উইঘুর সম্প্রদায়ের মুসলমান–অধ্যুষিত। অভিযোগের ধারাবাহিকতায় জোরপূর্বক শ্রম প্রতিরোধ আইন (ইউএফএলপিএ) পাস করে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র। সেই আইন কঠোরভাবে বাস্তবায়ন করে দেশটি। এতে বিপাকে পড়েছে ভিয়েতনাম।
