RMG exporters bracing for difficult times as orders slow Faruque Hassan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said the shipment to new markets, particularly in Asian nations such as Japan, South Korea and India, increased in FY23 and buyers also paid better prices. He said the global market for garment items currently worth nearly $750 billion may shrink by 20 per cent this year because of lower consumption by western consumers.Earlier, global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company said hyperinflation and depressed customer sentiments resulted in declining growth rates in the global fashion industry in the second half of 2022. "We expect that the slowdown is likely to continue through 2023."

S’pore delegation discuss trade matters with BGMEA A delegation of high officials from the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) of Singapore visited BGMEA. During the visit it met with BGMEA Vice President Shahidullah Azim to discuss potential trade and investment opportunities between Singapore and Bangladesh. BGMEA Director Abdullah Hil Rakib and Chair of BGMEA Standing Committee on Press, Publication and Publicity Shovon Islam were also present at the meeting.

মূল্যস্ফীতির আঘাতে অর্ডার কমছে পোশাকশিল্পে বৈশ্বিক উচ্চ মূল্যস্ফীতির আঘাতে অর্ডার বা ক্রয়াদেশ কমছে বাংলাদেশের পোশাকশিল্প কারখানাগুলোয়। দাম বাড়ছে পোশাকপণ্য উৎপাদনের কাঁচামালের। ক্রয়াদেশের অভাবে কমছে কারখানাগুলোর মুনাফা। আবার রপ্তানি হওয়া পোশাকপণ্যের অর্থ পরিশোধে গড়িমসি করছেন বৈশ্বিক ক্রেতারা। এর সঙ্গে গ্যাস-বিদ্যুৎ ও তেলের দাম এবং সংকটকে চ্যালেঞ্জ হিসেবে দেখছেন পোশাকশিল্প মালিকরা। বিজিএমইএ সহসভাপতি মোহাম্মদ শহিদউল্লাহ আজিম বলেন, বিশ্বব্যাপী মূল্যস্ফীতির কারণে বাংলাদেশের তৈরি পোশাকপণ্যের অর্ডার কমেছে। আগে যে ব্র্যান্ড প্রতিষ্ঠান ৪ লাখ পিস পোশাকপণ্যের অর্ডার দিত, তারা এখন দিচ্ছে ৫০ হাজার পিসের। মূলত বৈশ্বিক মূল্যস্ফীতির ধাক্কা লেগেছে তৈরি পোশাকশিল্পে। ফলে বাংলাদেশের অধিকাংশ পোশাকশিল্প প্রতিষ্ঠান পুরো উৎপাদনশীলতা কাজে লাগাতে পারছে না। কম-বেশি সব কারখানাতেই উৎপাদনশীলতার ৬০ থেকে ৭০ শতাংশ কাজ আছে। বাকি ৩০ থেকে ৪০ শতাংশ উৎপাদনশীলতার অপচয় হচ্ছে। আবার কাঁচামালের দাম বাড়ছে। ফলে কমছে মুনাফা।

Bangladesh apparel sector missing opportunity Bangladesh is failing to maximise its potential to secure a larger portion of the global apparel market, mainly due to the absence of a comprehensive policy on diversification, investment, and market access. Md Shahidullah Azim, vice president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, expressed that Bangladesh aimed to overtake China in apparel exports due to geopolitical reasons and China’s shift to the high-tech industry. However, he acknowledged that it would take time to achieve this goal. Azim also highlighted the potential harm to Bangladesh’s RMG sector competitiveness in the post-LDC era, as the country would lose duty-free market access worldwide.

Apparel export to US ebbs: Overall trend downward Apparel exports of Bangladesh to America recorded a notable fall during the first five months of 2023, as global economic slowdown, inflation and US rate rises continued to dampen demand, latest statistics show. BGMEA vice-president Md Shahidullah Azim says, " Geopolitical crisis, economic slowdown and huge inventory fuelled by high inflation and interest rates have eaten up the demand for apparel." Bangladesh received 30-40-percent less work orders for the last several months due to the buyers' huge inventory mainly because of high inflation and interest rates there. Responding to a question, he said Vietnam produce high value added items that receive high value, he adds.

৫ বছরের জন্য ইপিবির নিবন্ধন নিতে পারবে রপ্তানিকারকেরা ব্যবসায়ীদের দীর্ঘদিনের দাবির পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে ব্যবসা সহজ করার অংশ হিসেবে নিবন্ধন সনদের মেয়াদ এক বছর থেকে বাড়িয়ে পাঁচ বছরে উন্নীত করেছে রপ্তানি উন্নয়ন ব্যুরো (ইপিবি)। চলতি ২০২৩-২৪ অর্থবছরের প্রথম দিন থেকে সেটি কার্যকর হয়েছে। এর ফলে পণ্য রপ্তানিকারক প্রতিষ্ঠান এখন থেকে নিজেদের চাহিদা অনুযায়ী এক থেকে পাঁচ বছরের জন্য রপ্তানি উন্নয়ন ব্যুরো বা ইপিবির নিবন্ধন সনদ নিতে পারবে। এ জন্য প্রতিবছরের নির্ধারিত ফি দিতে হবে প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোকে। ১ জুলাই থেকে এ কার্যক্রম শুরু হয়েছে। গত ৩০ জুন পর্যন্ত ইপিবির নিবন্ধন হালানাগাদ ছিল, এমন প্রতিষ্ঠানই সুযোগটি নিতে পারবে।

Remove export barriers for sustainable economic growth: Md Shahidul Islam, Former vice president, BGMEA Bangladesh has been experiencing a significant boost in its export industry, in particular readymade garments sector. The latest statistics for June in the running year shows promising growth and highlight the country's potential as a global exporter. In the fiscal year 2021-22 (July 2021-June 2022), Bangladesh witnessed a remarkable surge of over 34 percent in exports, reaching a record-breaking $52.08 billion. On the other hand during July-June period of the 2022-2023 (FY23) fiscal total export was $55.56 billion of which only readymade garments was $47 billion. This data was provided by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) under the Ministry of Commerce.

'Industry-academia linkage' needed for skill dev Speakers at a discussion on Saturday stressed the need for an industry-academia linkage to reduce skill mismatch. They also recommended better collaboration, coordination and synchronisation between the industry and academia to secure the country's future economic development as well as to reduce the existing skill mismatch. The discussion titled "Industry-Academia Linkage: Employability of Graduates in the changing global context" was organised by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) at the trade body's office.
