BGMEA in trade talks with China’s Jiangsu Soho Holdings The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) recently discussed potential collaborations and investment opportunities in the textile and apparel sector with Jiangsu Soho Holdings Group Co Ltd—one of the largest silk import and export companies in China. A delegation from Jiangsu Soho Holdings Group Co Ltd recently visited the BGMEA to exchange knowledge and technical expertise, according to a press release on Thursday. Led by Zhou Yong, chairman of Jiangsu Soho Holdings, the delegation included Li Yanzhou, general manager of Jiangsu; Yu Tangmao, chairman of Jiangsu Soho Apparels; Wang Yile, sales manager of High Hope Zhongtian Corporation; Calvin Ngan, president of Overseas Chinese Association in Bangladesh; and Andy Chen, deputy president of Overseas Chinese Association in Bangladesh. The BGMEA side was headed by Senior Vice President Khandoker Rafiqul Islam and included Vice President Md Nasir Uddin, and Vice President Abdullah Hil Rakib, Directors Mohammad Sohel Sadat, Mesbah Uddin Khan, Shams Mahmud, Md Shahadat Hossain, Md Jakir Hossain, and Md Nurul Islam.

তৈরি পোশাকশিল্পে চ্যালেঞ্জ বাড়বে মানবাধিকার ও পরিবেশের ক্ষতি বন্ধে কোম্পানিগুলোর জন্য বাধ্যবাধকতার যে বিধান ইউরোপীয় পার্লামেন্টে পাস হয়েছে, তা কার্যকর হলে বাংলাদেশের তৈরি পোশাকসহ অন্যান্য শিল্পকারখানায় প্রভাব পড়বে। গত বুধবার করপোরেট সাসটেইনেবিলিটি ডিউ ডিলিজেন্স ডিরেক্টিভ (সিএসডিডিডি) নামের নির্দেশনাটি পাস করে ইউরোপীয় পার্লামেন্ট। এতে পণ্য সরবরাহ ও বিপণনের সার্বিক প্রক্রিয়ায় মানবাধিকার লঙ্ঘন ও পরিবেশের ক্ষতি বন্ধে কোম্পানিগুলোর পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণে বাধ্যবাধকতা আরোপ করা হয়েছে। জানতে চাইলে তৈরি পোশাকশিল্প মালিকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএর সহসভাপতি আরশাদ জামাল প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, বাংলাদেশের তৈরি পোশাক খাতে আজকের অবস্থানে নিয়ে যাওয়ার পেছনে মূল অবদান ক্ষুদ্র ও মাঝারি উদ্যোক্তাদের। ইইউর নতুন বিধান কার্যকর হলে বাংলাদেশের পোশাক খাত বড় বিনিয়োগকারীনির্ভর হয়ে যাবে। তখন ছোট ও মাঝারি কারখানাগুলো বিপদে পড়বে। কারণ, নতুন বিধান মানতে অনেক বিনিয়োগ লাগবে, যা এসব কারখানার পক্ষে করা কঠিন।

Heatwave leaves no impact on RMG production Garment exporters have taken extra measures to ensure the presence of workers in factories and the timely shipment of goods during the extreme heatwave that has swept over the country since the start of April.Many factory owners are supplying saline water to workers, shortening work shifts, and delivering health-conscious messages to workers to maintain productivity.Anwar-ul Alam Chowdhury Parvez, former president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said no negative impact had been noticed yet in terms of productivity and shipment of goods. BGMEA Vice-President Md Nasir Uddin said many factories are serving lemon juice to workers to avoid the risk of dehydration. Productivity remains unaffected in factories as workers' presence is still good, he added.

Lingering gas, power crises choke industries Industry insiders are saying that they are paying the government for air, not gas, and suffering due to 6 to 8 hours of load shedding daily. But the government had increased gas prices by up to 179 per cent early last year, saying that the increased prices will be used to import LNG from the spot market to ensure uninterrupted supply.On Monday, leaders of the textile, cement and steel sectors held a meeting in the capital to discuss such issues, and on Wednesday, the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) held a meeting as well. In these meetings, factory owners said the ongoing gas and electricity crisis put them into hot water amid the ongoing global and domestic economic crises. They have been paying more gas prices since last year for quality supply, but the situation continues to worsen day by day. Amid the situation, business leaders planned to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina soon, and the FBCCI will try to manage the meeting schedule, insiders say.

USTR identifies Bangladesh among top-five counterfeit product suppliers The United States Trade Representative (USTR) said Bangladesh is one of the top five sources for counterfeit clothing globally, which stakeholders have identified as a concern this year. In its 2024 Special 301 Report on Intellectual Property Protection and Enforcement released yesterday, the USTR identified several countries which supply counterfeit products, violating intellectual property rights. According to a study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) released in 2021, the global trade of counterfeit and pirated goods reached $464 billion in 2019.

EDITORIAL : Bangladesh lags behind RMG competitors According to OTEXA data, the country's RMG exports to the US totaled US$1.18 billion in the two-month period mentioned which is a 19.24 per cent decrease compared to the corresponding period in 2023. Unless the RMG sector wakes up and addresses the problems it has at factory level, it will become increasingly difficult to do business. Policymakers too should weigh the pros and cons of getting the house in order in terms of logistics bottlenecks if they don't want the dominant export sector to suffer and experience a dip in its exports.

স্মার্ট সুদহারে বিপাকে ব্যবসায়ীরা মূল্যস্ফীতি নিয়ন্ত্রণ ও অর্থনৈতিক সংকট নিরসনে ৬ ও ৯ সুদহার নীতি ভেঙে স্মার্ট সুদহার নীতি ঘোষণায় আরও বেশি বিপাকে পড়েছেন ব্যবসায়ীরা। একই সঙ্গে মূল্যস্ফীতির চাপও ঊর্ধ্বমুখীই রয়েছে। নতুন এ স্মার্ট নীতির কারণে প্রতি মাসে বাড়ছে ব্যাংক ঋণের সুদহার। অথচ সে হারে বাড়ছে না ব্যবসায়ীদের আয় ও আনুষঙ্গিক সুযোগসুবিধা। এতে শিল্পোৎপাদনের খরচ বাড়ছে প্রতিনিয়ত; যা ব্যবসাবাণিজ্য বিপর্যস্ত করে ফেলছে। এর ফলে নতুন কোনো বিনিয়োগে আগ্রহী হচ্ছেন না শিল্পোদ্যোক্তারা। এমনকি শিল্পায়ন তো হচ্ছেই না বরং উল্টো চলমান শিল্প ইউনিটগুলো টিকিয়ে রাখাও কঠিন হয়ে পড়েছে। বাধাগ্রস্ত হচ্ছে কর্মসংস্থান; যা দেশের সামষ্টিক অর্থনীতি আরও গভীর সংকটের দিকে ঠেলে দিচ্ছে বলে মনে করেন ব্যবসায়ী ও অর্থনীতিবিদরা।

ইইউর পরামর্শ : রপ্তানি ধরে রাখতে সতর্ক হতে হবে বাংলাদেশকে পণ্য উৎপাদন থেকে শুরু করে বিক্রি পর্যন্ত সব পর্যায়ে পরিবেশ সুরক্ষা, মানবাধিকার, শ্রম অধিকার ইত্যাদি নিশ্চিত করতে ইউরোপীয় ইউনিয়নের (ইইউ) পার্লামেন্টে পাস হওয়া নতুন আইন নিয়ে উদ্বেগের কিছু দেখছেন না বাংলাদেশের রপ্তানিকারক ও উদ্যোক্তারা। তবে ইইউর ২৭ দেশে রপ্তানি অব্যাহত রাখতে সংশ্লিষ্ট বিষয়গুলোতে বাংলাদেশকে আরও বেশি সতর্ক হয়ে প্রয়োজনীয় পদক্ষেপ নিতে হবে বলে মনে করেন তারা। এ বিষয়ে রপ্তানিকারক ও উদ্যোক্তারা বলছেন, সতর্ক থেকে বেশ কিছু বিষয় নিশ্চিত করতে হবে বাংলাদেশকে। মানবাধিকার, শ্রম অধিকার, সুশাসন ও পরিবেশ সুরক্ষাবিষয়ক চারটি মূল নীতিসহ জাতিসংঘের ৩২টি কনভেনশন অনুস্বাক্ষর করতে হবে। জাতীয় কর্মপরিকল্পনায় দেওয়া প্রতিশ্রুতি অনুসারে বাংলাদেশ আন্তর্জাতিক শ্রম সংস্থার (আইএলও) সব মূল কনভেনশন অনুস্বাক্ষর করেছে। তবে বাংলাদেশ এখনও কার্বন দূষণ কমানোর ক্ষেত্রে পিছিয়ে। দেশের প্রায় ৯৫ শতাংশ রপ্তানিকারক কারখানা জীবাশ্ম জ্বালানি ব্যবহার করে। তাই নবায়নযোগ্য জ্বালানি ব্যবহার বাড়াতে হবে। আরও বেশি নজর দিতে হবে শ্রম অধিকার নিশ্চিতে।
