BUDGET FY25 : Business leaders unhappy, seek government action Business leaders have expressed disappointment with the facilities cut in the proposed budget for FY25 and urged Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali to review the policies, particularly taxation, considering the ongoing economic challenges and high inflation, and have suggested making the export sector more competitive. Urging the continuation of duty-free investment facilities in economic zones for at least five years and increasing the minimum tax limit, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President SM Mannan Kochi said, "Otherwise, small entrepreneurs will struggle to thrive given the current high interest rates and business establishment costs."

২৩ মাসের মধ্যে সর্বোচ্চ এলসি খোলা হয়েছে মে মাসে ডলার-সংকটে আমদানি পণ্যের ঋণপত্র (এলসি) খোলায় কড়াকড়ি আরোপ করেছে কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংক। এর প্রভাবে ধারাবাহিকভাবে আমদানি কমেছিল। অনেক উদ্যোক্তা শতভাগ মার্জিন দিয়েও এলসি খুলতে পারেনি। অবশ্য সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে এর কিছুটা উন্নতি লক্ষ্য করা গেছে। দীর্ঘ ২৩ মাসের মধ্যে সর্বোচ্চ এলসি খোলা হয়েছে গত মে মাসে। তবে একই সময়ে এলসি নিষ্পত্তি এপ্রিলের তুলনায় কিছুটা কমেছে। মে মাসে দেশের রাষ্ট্রায়ত্ত ও বেসরকারি ব্যাংকগুলো ৬ দশমিক ৮৩ বিলিয়ন ডলারের আমদানি এলসি খুলেছে।

The new unit, named Ananta Knitwear Limited and located in Narsingdi, will serve as the first backward linkage industry for one of the country's leading apparel exporters, aiming to capture a significant share of the export market for activewear, sportswear, and intimate apparel based on manmade fibre.

How LC openings in May reach 2-year high despite dollar crisis Bangladesh witnessed its highest Letter of Credit (LC) openings in 23 months, amounting to US$6.83 billion in May 2024, amid an ongoing foreign exchange crisis, according to Bangladesh Bank. Previously, the highest LC opening was recorded in June 2022, reaching $7.02 billion. Since then, fluctuating dollar exchange rates and the domestic currency, the taka, have generally led to a decreasing trend in LC openings.

Export growth drops as RMG demand falls globally State minister for commerce Ahasanul Islam said Bangladesh witnessed a downtrend in the growth of readymade exports as RMG demand fell in the global markets. He said this in reply to a query from Awami League lawmaker M Abdul Latif during a question and answer session in parliament on Sunday.

বেসরকারি ইজেডে কর অবকাশ সুবিধা থাকছে বেসরকারি অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চলে (ইজেড) বিনিয়োগকারীদের জন্য কর অবকাশ সুবিধা বাতিলের সিদ্ধান্ত থেকে পিছিয়ে আসতে পারে সরকার। ইজেডগুলোতে স্থানীয় ও বিদেশি বিনিয়োগ আকর্ষণে এমনটি করার সম্ভাবনা রয়েছে বলে জানিয়েছে জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড (এনবিআর) সূত্র। চলতি মাসের শুরুতে ২০২৪-২৫ অর্থবছরের প্রস্তাবিত বাজেটে কর ইজেডে অবকাশ সুবিধা প্রত্যাহারের ঘোষণা দেওয়া হলে বিনিয়োগকারীদের মধ্যে ব্যাপকভাবে হতাশা ও ক্ষোভ তৈরি হয়। এর পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে সিদ্ধান্তটি এখন পুনর্বিবেচনা করা হচ্ছে। আজ মঙ্গলবার এটিসহ বাজেট সম্পর্কিত আরও কিছু বিষয়ে প্রধানমন্ত্রীর কার্যালয়ে একটি বৈঠক হওয়ার কথা রয়েছে। এনবিআরের কর্মকর্তারা জানান, কার্যক্রম শুরুর এক দশকে ২০ থেকে ১০০ শতাংশ পর্যন্ত কর অব্যাহতির সুবিধা পাচ্ছেন অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চলগুলোর (ইজেড) বিনিয়োগকারীরা। প্রস্তাবিত বাজেটে সরকারি উদ্যোগে প্রতিষ্ঠিত ইজেডগুলোর জন্য এ সুবিধা অব্যাহত রাখা হলেও, আগামী অর্থবছর থেকে বেসরকারি ইজেডের জন্য তা বাতিল করার কথা বলা হয়েছে।
