Complete normalcy returns to RMG sector All factories are open in Narayanganj, Gazipur and Dhaka Metropolitan area, according to a garment sector situation update released by the chief adviser's press wing. A minor crisis was reported in 3 factories at Savar-Ashulia, Narayanganj and Gazipur. Currently, only one factory, as per rule 13/1, out of 401 is closed throughout the Savar-Ashulia area, the situation update said.

বিজিএমইএতে কাজ শুরু করলেন প্রশাসক আনোয়ার তৈরি পোশাকশিল্প মালিকদের সংগঠন বাংলাদেশ গার্মেন্টস ম্যানুফ্যাকচারার্স অ্যান্ড এক্সপোর্টার্স অ্যাসোসিয়েশনে (বিজিএমইএ) প্রশাসক হিসেবে সদ্য নিয়োগ পাওয়া আনোয়ার হোসেন তার দপ্তরে কাজ শুরু করেছেন। সোমবার (২১ অক্টোবর) বিকেলে রাজধানীর উত্তরায় বিজিএমইএ কমপ্লেক্সে সংগঠনটির কার্যালয়ে যান তিনি। এসময় বিজিএমইএ মহাসচিব ফয়জুর রহমান এবং অন্য কর্মকর্তারা তাকে অভ্যর্থনা জানান। এরপর আনোয়ার হোসেন বিজিএমইএ দপ্তরের বিভাগীয় প্রধানদের সঙ্গে বৈঠকে মিলিত হন এবং করণীয় বিষয়ে বিভিন্ন দিক-নির্দেশনা দেন।

এএফপির প্রতিবেদন : চাপ সামলে ঘুরে দাঁড়াচ্ছে বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতি ছাত্র-জনতার বিক্ষোভের মুখে বাংলাদেশের প্রধানমন্ত্রীর পদ থেকে ক্ষমতাচ্যুত হয়ে গত ৫ আগস্ট শেখ হাসিনা পালিয়ে ভারতে চলে যান। এরপর ড. মুহাম্মদ ইউনূসের নেতৃত্বে অন্তর্বর্তীকালীন সরকার দায়িত্ব নেয়। বিক্ষোভ-সহিংসতায় চাপের মুখে পড়া বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতিও ঘুরে দাঁড়াতে শুরু করেছে। তবে গত জুলাই-আগস্টে বিক্ষোভ ও তৎপরবর্তী সময়ে বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতি বেশ চাপে পড়েছিল। এর জেরে সেই সময় ৪০০ মিলিয়ন মার্কিন ডলার হারিয়েছে বাংলাদেশের পোশাকশিল্প। তবে পরিস্থিতি এখন স্থিতিশীল। গতকাল সোমবার প্রকাশিত এক প্রতিবেদনে এসব তথ্য জানায় বার্তা সংস্থা এএফপি।খন্দকার রফিকুল ইসলাম বলেন, ফ্যাক্টরি রক্ষার জন্য সেনাবাহিনী একটি টাস্কফোর্স গঠন করেছে এবং তারা গার্মেন্টস হাবগুলোতে নিরাপত্তা নিশ্চিত করার জন্য নিয়মিত টহল চালাচ্ছেন। ক্রেতারা বাংলাদেশি পোশাকের প্রতি তাদের আস্থা ফিরে পেয়েছে, তবে স্থিতিশীলতা বজায় রাখতে আইনশৃঙ্খলা নিরবচ্ছিন্ন থাকা অপরিহার্য।

Editorial : Loss to RMG industry Before his exit from the post of president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Sunday, Khandoker Rafiqul Islam claimed that normalcy has returned to the apparel sector but at a huge cost. According to him, the industry lost $400 million in more than a month-long industrial unrest, which has yet to be confirmed by any independent statistical body. If the figure of loss is anywhere near the given sum, it raises more questions than can be answered. In 2023, the readymade garment (RMG) sector fetched $47.38 billion, a record high, and the apex apparel body did not do enough to settle some of the endemic issues souring the industry's labour relations.

Unrest erodes Bangladesh’s RMG edge over rivals Garment exports by Bangladesh's market rivals like India, Vietnam, China and Cambodia have increased to major Western markets due mainly to the latest spell of labour unrest and political changeover earlier in August in the country. AK Azad, chairman and managing director of Ha-Meem Group, which mainly exports to the USA, said he experienced labour unrest and his export was affected like others. "However, now I have been booking a lot of work orders from the buyer as they are coming back for the next seasons," Azad said. Ex-president of now dissolved Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) Khandoker Rafiqul Islam also echoed Azad, saying, "Buyers are coming back now as the normalcy has restored in the sector."

বাংলাদেশের সংকটে পোশাক রপ্তানি বাড়ছে ভারতের ভারতীয় ইংরেজি দৈনিক দ্য টেলিগ্রাফ বলছে, বাংলাদেশের সংকটের সুযোগে সেপ্টেম্বরে ভারতের পোশাক রপ্তানি ১৭ দশমিক ৩ শতাংশ বেড়েছে। টেলিগ্রাফ তাদের প্রতিবেদনে বলছে, ভারতীয় রপ্তানিকারকরা স্বল্প মেয়াদে ২০ থেকে ২৫ কোটি ডলারের মাসিক ক্রয়াদেশ পেয়েছে।গত শনিবার এক সংবাদ সম্মেলনে বাংলাদেশ তৈরি পোশাক প্রস্তুতকারক ও রপ্তানিকারক সমিতির (বিজিএমইএ) সদ্য বিদায়ী সভাপতি খন্দকার রফিকুল ইসলাম বলেন, সাভার ও আশুলিয়ায় পোশাক খাতের শ্রমিকদের অসন্তোষের কারণে প্রায় ৪০ কোটি ডলারের ক্রয়াদেশ ভারত, পাকিস্তান, কম্বোডিয়া ও ভিয়েতনামে চলে গেছে। তবে এক্ষেত্রে এসব ক্রেতাদের ফেরানো যাবে বলেও মনে করেন তিনি।

Automation, while presenting challenges for the workforce, is also key to enhancing the industry’s global competitiveness. Advanced technologies can significantly boost productivity, improve quality control, and lower operational costs, ensuring that Bangladesh’s RMG sector maintains its competitive edge internationally, according to a media release.

RMG exports to EU fall in Jan-Aug Bangladesh’s apparel exports to the European Union in the first eight months or January-August period of 2024 fell by 3.51 per cent as earnings from knitwear witnessed a sharp decline while woven garment exports registered a meagre growth in the period. According to data from Eurostat, statistical office of the European Union, Bangladesh’s export earnings from the EU, the 27-nation economic bloc, decreased to 11.90 billion euros in January-August of 2024 from 12.34 billion euros in the same period of 2023.
