Can Bangladesh fend off Vietnam in RMG race? Bangladesh's status as the world's second-largest garment exporter has become increasingly precarious, driven by a confluence of global trade shifts, regional competition and structural inefficiencies at home. The imposition of 37 percent tariffs by the Trump administration has only intensified the pressure on Bangladesh, prompting industry leaders and analysts to express concern over the country's ability to maintain its global standing.Many industry leaders are monitoring Vietnam's ascent warily. Although Vietnam faces a steeper tariff -- 46 percent compared to Bangladesh's 37 percent -- there is growing concern that Bangladesh's limited trade diplomacy, coupled with its slower shift towards value-added production, could allow Vietnam to surpass it in global rankings.

১৫ মাসে বন্ধ ১১৩ কারখানা, নতুন এসেছে ১২৮টি তৈরি পোশাক শিল্পের মালিকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএ সূত্রে জানা গেছে, গত বছরের জানুয়ারি থেকে চলতি বছরের মার্চ পর্যন্ত ১৫ মাসে তাদের নতুন সদস্য হয়েছে ১২৮টি কারখানা। তবে এই পনেরো মাসে আবার ১১৩টি কারখানা বন্ধও হয়ে গেছে। কর্মসংস্থানের হিসাবে যোগবিয়োগের পর এখনো বেকারের সংখ্যা ২২ হাজার। যদিও এটিকে স্বাভাবিক প্রক্রিয়া বলছেন গার্মেন্টস খাতের অনেকে। নতুন ১২৮ কারখানায় মোট ৭৪ হাজার মানুষের কর্মসংস্থান হয়েছে। আর ১১৩টি কারখানা বন্ধ হওয়ায় কাজ হারিয়েছেন ৯৬ হাজার ১০৪ শ্রমিক। বিজিএমইএর তথ্যে দেখা গেছে, ১১৩টির মধ্যে ৬৯টি (৬১ শতাংশ) বন্ধ হয়েছে গত বছরের আগস্ট থেকে চলতি বছরের মার্চ পর্যন্ত সময়ে। তবে সার্বিক পরিস্থিতি নিয়ে অনেক তৈরি পোশাক ব্যবসায়ীই আশাবাদ প্রকাশ করেছেন। তাঁরা বলছেন, পুরোনো কিছু কারখানার উৎপাদন সক্ষমতা বাড়াতে নতুন বিনিয়োগ হচ্ছে। এতে সামনের দিনগুলোতে ভালো কিছু হবে বলে আশা করা যায়। আর কারখানা চালু ও বন্ধ হওয়া একটি চলমান প্রক্রিয়া। সব ধরনের শিল্প খাতেই এমন দেখা যায়।

DUTY WAIVER: BTMA seeks US council help The country’s textile millers sought support from National Cotton Council of America to facilitate duty waiver negotiations with relevant United States government offices and to assist in expanding US cotton exports to Bangladesh. They also sought duty-free access to the North American country’s market for ready-made garments manufactured using US cotton.In this regard, Showkat Aziz Russell, president of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association, recently wrote to NCCA president and chief executive officer Gary Adams.  In the letter, the association also called for Bangladesh to be permanently removed from the list of countries currently facing an additional 37-per cent duty on exports to the US.

EDITORIAL : Is FDI a boon or bane for RMG sector? The question of whether Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Bangladesh's readymade garment (RMG) sector is ultimately beneficial remains unresolved. Industry stakeholders and policymakers have yet to provide a definitive stance. There are foreign collaborations, but not in the form of any large-scale FDI. However, the government's efforts to attract FDI in both within and outside the Export Processing Zones (EPZs) is not industry-specific, and hence not meant to exclude any specific manufacturing sector beyond the scope of investment. The key question remains: is FDI outside the specialised zones a welcome proposition?

মার্কিন তুলায় তৈরি পোশাক রফতানিতে শুল্কমুক্ত সুবিধা চায় বাংলাদেশ মার্কিন তুলা দিয়ে উৎপাদিত তৈরি পোশাক পণ্য (আরএমজি) যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বাজারে প্রবেশের ক্ষেত্রে শূণ্য শুল্ক সুবিধা চেয়ে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ন্যাশনাল কটন কাউন্সিল অব আমেরিকা’র (এনসিসিএ) সহযোগিতা চেয়েছে বাংলাদেশ টেক্সটাইল মিলস অ্যাসোসিয়েশন (বিটিএমএ)। এনসিসিএ সভাপতি ও প্রধান নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তা গ্যারি অ্যাডামসকে পাঠানো এক চিঠিতে এ অনুরোধ জানান বিটিএমএ সভাপতি শওকত আজিজ রাসেল। চিঠির অনুলিপি যুক্তরাষ্ট্র দূতাবাসের কাউন্সেলর এরিক গিলানকেও পাঠানো হয়েছে। সম্প্রতি এই চিঠি পাঠানো হয়েছে। এই চিঠির অনুলিপি সারাবাংলার হাতে এসেছে।
