95 candidates contesting for 35 director positions in BGMEA elections A total of 95 candidates have submitted their nomination forms to contest the 35 director positions in the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) board in the upcoming biennial elections for the 2025-2027 tenure. Of the candidates from the two contesting panels, Sammilita Parishad and Forum submitted their nomination papers on Saturday at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara. Sammilito Parishad's 43 candidates submitted 44 nomination forms. Of them, 33 are contesting from the Dhaka region for 26 director positions, while 10 nomination forms have been submitted for nine director positions from the Chattogram region.On the other hand, the Forum panel submitted 46 nomination forms – 34 from the Dhaka region and 12 from the Chattogram region. Earlier on Thursday, six independent candidates submitted their nomination papers. BGMEA Administrator Md Anwar Hossain welcomed the leaders and candidates of both panels.

Rival panels submit nominations for BGMEA elections With the biennial election of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) scheduled for 31 May, two panels today submitted their nomination papers to contest the poll. In the BGMEA election, two panels — the Forum and Sammilito Parishad — are contesting, according to a BGMEA statement.Mahmud Hasan Khan (Babu) submitted his nomination as the panel leader of the Forum. Meanwhile, former BGMEA president Faruque Hassan submitted the nomination papers on behalf of Sammilito Parishad panel leader Abul Kalam.

Apparel exports to EU witness robust 37pc growth in Jan-Feb Bangladesh's readymade garment exports to the European Union (EU) recorded a robust 37-percent growth during January-February period of 2025, staying ahead of the major competitors like China, Vietnam, Turkey, and India. Apparel exports to the EU market during the first two months of this year fetched US$ 3.69 billion, compared to US$ 2.69 billion earned in the same period of last year, according to data compiled by BGMEA based on Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU. Exporters have attributed the rise to a number of factors, including rising global demand, shift of work orders from China, and duty-free market access, while local reasons are competitive pricing, enhanced capacity, efficiency, productivity, workplace-safety compliance, and the production of quality goods.

Bangladesh’s garment exports to EU surge 37% in Jan-Feb Bangladesh's readymade garment exports to the European Union (EU) grew by 36.99 percent year-on-year to $3.69 billion in the January–February period of 2025, buoyed by a robust 39.02 percent increase in shipment volume, according to data from Eurostat. However, the unit price of apparel exports declined by 1.46 percent during the period, highlighting the challenges in maintaining profitability.In the corresponding period of 2024, Bangladesh had exported garment products worth $2.69 billion to the EU. Overall, the EU's apparel imports rose by 17.81 percent to $16.10 billion in the first two months of 2025. This growth was underpinned by a 28.66 percent rise in volume, although average unit prices fell by 8.44 percent.

Bangladesh races to expand air cargo capacity Bangladesh is racing to expand its air cargo capacity after India's abrupt suspension of third-country transshipment earlier this month upended a logistics route for garment exporters. The Indian decision, announced without warning on April 8, cut off a vital land-air corridor that allowed Bangladeshi goods to move overland to Kolkata and Delhi airports and onward to global markets. The disruption has forced Dhaka to fast-track efforts to diversify export channels and reduce dependence on India. In a first move to address the shortfall, Sylhet's Osmani International Airport is set to launch dedicated cargo operations today and become the country's second airport to handle freighter flights after Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).
