Denmark to continue supporting RMG sector, promoting green technology Denmark has pledged to continue supporting Bangladesh ready-made garment (RMG) sector and the development of green technology, reported UNB. Denmark stressed partnership with Bangladesh in clean and green technology, expressing a desire to deepen this cooperation, particularly in renewable energy, energy efficiency, circular economy, sustainable water management, climate change adaptation, and information and communication technology (ICT). These remarks came while Christian Brix Moller, ambassador of Denmark to Bangladesh, met with Mahmud Hasan Khan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), on Monday at the BGMEA Complex in Dhaka to discuss avenues for collaboration within the ready-made garment (RMG) sector.Also present at the meeting were BGMEA Vice President Md Rezwan Selim and Director Sheikh Hossain Muhammad Mustafiz.

Diplomatic engagement stressed to strengthen US-Bangladesh trade relations Distinguished diplomats, academics, and industry leaders gathered at North South University (NSU) to discuss the evolving dynamics of Bangladesh-United States relations in the context of recent national and global developments. The seminar, titled "The Significance of the July Revolution for US-Bangladesh Relations: Looking Back, Looking Forward," was organized by the South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance (SIPG) at NSU on July 28. The event brought together prominent experts in diplomacy, policy, and trade, including former U.S. diplomat Jon F. Danilowicz, NSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, and Professor (retd) Shahiduzzaman of Dhaka University. They shared their insightful views on the strategic importance of US-Bangladesh ties in a changing global landscape.

মার্কিন শুল্ক কমানোর চেষ্টা: দেড়শ কোটি ডলারের আমদানি বৃদ্ধির প্রতিশ্রুতি দেবে ঢাকা পাল্টা শুল্ক কমানোর চেষ্টার অংশ হিসেবে আগামী এক থেকে দেড় বছরের মধ্যে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র থেকে দেড় বিলিয়ন বা ১৫০ কোটি ডলার আমদানি বাড়ানোর প্রতিশ্রুতি দেবে বাংলাদেশ। সরকার আশা করছে, প্রতিযোগী দেশগুলোর চেয়ে বাংলাদেশের ওপর পাল্টা শুল্ক কম হবে। কেননা, ট্রাম্পের মূল লক্ষ্য বাণিজ্য ঘাটতি কমানো। এ জন্য বাংলাদেশ নতুন করে যে পরিমাণ আমদানির পরিকল্পনা করছে, তাতে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র থেকে আমদানি বছরে অনেক বাড়বে। এটি এক থেকে দেড় বছরের মধ্যে তিন বিলিয়ন বা ৩০০ কোটি ডলার পর্যন্ত বাড়তে পারে বলে ধারণা করছে বাণিজ্য মন্ত্রণালয়। এদিকে বাংলাদেশের পণ্যের ওপর ৩৫ শতাংশ পাল্টা শুল্ক কমানোর লক্ষ্যে তৃতীয় দফার আলোচনার জন্য যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের উদ্দেশে গতকাল সোমবার সন্ধ্যা সাড়ে ৭টায় ঢাকা ছেড়েছে বাণিজ্য উপদেষ্টা শেখ বশিরউদ্দীনের নেতৃত্বে একটি প্রতিনিধি দল।

US tariffs could deepen inequality in global RMG, warns AFWA The Asia Floor Wage Alliance (AFWA), a coalition of trade unions representing garment workers across Asia, has condemned the recent imposition of US tariffs on apparel imports, warning that the move could trigger a humanitarian crisis and exacerbate inequality in the global garment industry. In a statement issued on Monday, the coalition also called for brand accountability, stating that companies profiting from outsourced production cannot remain silent when tariff changes lead to factory closures and mass layoffs. "The US government's recent imposition of tariffs on apparel imports from Asia endangers the livelihoods of millions of garment workers, predominantly women, who are already earning poverty-level wages," the statement said.

ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্যে মহাসংকট দেশি-বিদেশি শুল্কে দেশের ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্য সংকটময় অবস্থা পার করছে। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সঙ্গে শুল্ক নিয়ে দেনদরবার চলছে। আলোচনার মাধ্যমে শুল্ক না কমলে ১ লা আগস্ট থেকে ৩৫ শতাংশ অতিরিক্ত শুল্ক বাংলাদেশি পণ্যের ওপর অরোপ করা হবে। এর ফলে বাংলাদেশের পণ্যের ওপর মোট ৫০ শতাংশ পাল্টা শুল্ক অরোপ হবে।ফলে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্য আরো কঠিন হবে। এরই মধ্যে চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরের বিভিন্ন সেবা খাতের মাশুল বা ট্যারিফ বাড়ানোর ঘোষণা দেওয়া হয়েছে। আবার বেসরকারি ডিপোতে কনটেইনার ব্যবস্থাপনার মাশুলের হার বাড়ানো হচ্ছে। এর পুরোটাই বহন করতে হবে আমদানি-রপ্তানিকারকদের।
