অবৈধ কারখানা না চালানোর দাবি বিজিএমইএ’র মিরপুরের শিয়ালবাড়ীতে ওয়াশিং কারখানায় অগ্নিকাণ্ডে ১৬ জনের প্রাণহানির ঘটনায় দুঃখ প্রকাশ করেছে বিজিএমইএ। একই সঙ্গে নিয়ন্ত্রক সংস্থার নজরের বাইরে গিয়ে কোনো অবৈধ কারখানা যাতে কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা করতে না পারে, সে দাবি জানিয়েছে সংগঠনটি। বুধবার এক বিবৃতিতে বিজিএমইএ জানিয়েছে, যেসব প্রতিষ্ঠানে অগ্নিকাণ্ড ঘটেছে, সেগুলো বিজিএমইএ সদস্য নয়। এমনকি কোনো স্বীকৃত শিল্প সংস্থার সঙ্গে সম্পর্কিত নয় এবং আরএমজি সাসটেইনেবিলিটি কাউন্সিলের আওতায়ও পড়ে না। তাই এই ইউনিটগুলো বাংলাদেশের রপ্তানিমুখী তৈরি পোশাক শিল্পের অংশ নয়। আগামীতে যাতে এ ধরনের দুঃখজনক ঘটনার পুনরাবৃত্তি না ঘটে সেজন্য কলকারখানা ও প্রতিষ্ঠান পরিদর্শন অধিদপ্তর এবং সংশ্লিষ্ট কর্তৃপক্ষ এ ব্যাপারে যথাযথ ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করবেন আমরা আশা করি।

Govt asked to ensure due diligence at all factories The country’s business leaders on Wednesday urged the government to ensure due diligence in all factories across the country. In the context of the Tuesday’s fire incident at Mirpur, the industry leaders also stressed the need for increased monitoring by the government and relevant authorities to ensure compliance with adequate fire safety rules. Inamul Haq Khan, acting president of BGMEA, urged the DIFE and relevant authorities to ensure due diligence across all industries to uphold the highest standards of compliance, for the greater interest of both our industries and the nation’s reputation. In a written statement, he also said the government to take firm enforcement measures to ensure that no illegal facilities or warehouses operate outside regulatory oversight. Inamul expressed concern over misleading and sensationalised headlines circulating in recent media reports about the tragic fire incident.

Safety at stake as many RMG units run sans affiliation with trade bodies Several hundred apparel factories that export directly or partly are not associated with any of the two apparel apex bodies -- BGMEA and BKMEA -- thus posing safety risks to their workers. The workers' safety issues of those factories remain either less or properly monitored, industry insiders have said. According to them, the majority of such garment factories are engaged in subcontracting and exporting goods to non-traditional markets beyond the European Union, US and Canada. As a result, activities of the "non-member" factories remain less monitored as buyers of non-traditional markets do not usually ask for required compliance standards, they added.

বাড়তি মাশুল আরোপ করায় সাত জাহাজের অনুমতি বাতিল চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরে গতকাল বুধবার থেকে বাড়তি মাশুল কার্যকর হয়েছে। এই বাড়তি মাশুল পুষিয়ে নিতে সারচার্জ বা অতিরিক্ত ভাড়া আরোপ করেছিল বিদেশি শিপিং কোম্পানিগুলো। তবে সারচার্জ আরোপ করায় বন্দর কর্তৃপক্ষ ফ্রান্সভিত্তিক একটি শিপিং কোম্পানির সাতটি জাহাজের অনুমোদন বাতিল করেছে। অন্য শিপিং কোম্পানিগুলোকেও সারচার্জ প্রত্যাহার করার জন্য বলেছে। অন্যথায় তাদেরও জাহাজের অনুমতি বাতিল অর্থাৎ চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরে জাহাজ পরিচালনার অনুমতি দেওয়া হবে না বলে বন্দর থেকে জানিয়ে দেওয়া হয়েছে—এমন অভিযোগ করেছে কয়েকটি শিপিং লাইন। এ পরিস্থিতিতে দুটি শিপিং কোম্পানি তাদের সারচার্জ প্রত্যাহার করেছে বলে বন্দরকে জানিয়েছে।

"Particularly, we urge the government to take firm enforcement measures to ensure that no illegal facilities or warehouses operate outside regulatory oversight," said Inamul Haq khan, acting president of the BGMEA.

Through this, Bangladesh has significantly strengthened its position as the global leader in eco-friendly industrialization, with its ready-made garment (RMG) sector boasting an impressive total of 268 LEED-certified.Mohiuddin Rubel, former director of BGMEA and Managing Director of Bangladesh Apparel Exchange, underscored the significance of this milestone. “Bangladesh is now the global leader not just in garment exports, but also in eco-friendly production systems,” Rubel stated. Bangladesh’s industrial sector has become a symbol of sustainable development, which will further increase the confidence of international buyers, he opined.

লাভের বন্দরে বর্ধিত মাশুল নিয়ে প্রশ্ন, বোঝা ভোক্তার কাঁধে আমদানি-রপ্তানি মিলে ৫৬ সেবায় মাশুল বাড়িয়েছে চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর। সরকারি গেজেট প্রকাশের এক মাস পরে মঙ্গলবার (১৪ অক্টোবর) মধ্যরাত থেকে এ মাশুল কার্যকর হয়েছে। ঘোষণার পর থেকে বন্দর সংশ্লিষ্ট শিপিং এজেন্টরাও মাশুল বাড়িয়েছেন। সংশ্লিষ্টরা বলছেন, বন্দরের বর্ধিত এ মাশুলের প্রভাব পড়বে পণ্যের দামে। এতে বর্ধিত মাশুলের চাপে ভোক্তারাই বেশি ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হবেন। ব্যবসায়ীরা বলছেন, লাভের চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর কেন মাশুল বাড়িয়েছে। বিদেশি অপারেটরদের লাভের জন্য মাশুল বাড়ানো হচ্ছে। আগামী ডিসেম্বরে বন্দরের দুটি টার্মিনাল অপারেশনের দায়িত্ব বিদেশি প্রতিষ্ঠানের কাছে হস্তান্তর করার পরিকল্পনার কথা জানিয়েছে অন্তর্বর্তী সরকার।
