A difficult year on the apparel factory floor

Exporters say 2025 failed to deliver the stability or margins they had hoped for, despite pockets of shipment growth. Expectations of improvement have largely been deferred to 2026, resting more on political timing and buyer behaviour than on any clear easing of structural pressures. Inamul Haq Khan, senior vice-president of BGMEA, also pointed to electoral timing. "Usually, international retailers and brands hold back some work orders before the general election and place full orders after it," he said. "This year, Christmas sales in the US were disappointing, as clothing prices rose due to higher tariffs," said Khan.During the July-November period, exports to the EU accounted for nearly half of total garment shipments, although earnings from the bloc edged down slightly compared with the same period a year earlier, according to Mohiuddin Rubel, former BGMEA director and managing director of Bangladesh Apparel Exchange Ltd.

RMG productivity rises 4.19pc due to automation Bangladesh’s readymade garments industry has achieved annual productivity growth of 4.19 per cent between 2014 and 2023, driven by automation and technological upgrades, according to a recent study by the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies. The study, titled ‘Technological changes at the process and sub-process level in the RMG industry in Bangladesh’, said that RMG firms’ production of jackets witnessed the highest annual productivity growth by 6.59 per cent.Inamul Haq Khan, senior vice president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said that manufacturers had invested millions in installing automatic cutting and fabric-spreading machines that could be operated via apps to improve efficiency.

বিজিএমইএর চিঠি : ঢাকা, টঙ্গী ও গাজীপুরের পোশাক কারখানায় কাল ছুটি দেয়ার পরামর্শ বাংলাদেশ জাতীয়তাবাদী দল বিএনপির ভারপ্রাপ্ত চেয়ারম্যান তারেক রহমানের দেশে ফেরা উপলক্ষে আগামীকাল ঢাকা, টঙ্গী ও গাজীপুর এলাকার পোশাক কারখানাগুলোয় সাধারণ ছুটি ঘোষণার পরামর্শ দিয়েছে এ খাতের ব্যবসায়ীদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএ। সংগঠনের পক্ষ থেকে গতকাল সদস্য কারখানাগুলোয় পাঠানো এক চিঠিতে এ পরামর্শ দেয়া হয়।

শিল্পে গ্যাস সরবরাহ বাড়ানোর সিদ্ধান্ত বিদ্যুৎ খাতে সরবরাহ কমিয়ে শিল্প কারখানা এবং ক্যাপটিভে গ্যাস সরবরাহ বাড়ানোর সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে পেট্রোবাংলা। নতুন বছরের শুরু থেকে বাড়তি গ্যাস সরবরাহ করা হবে। বর্তমানে দৈনিক ৮৯ কোটি ঘনফুট থেকে বাড়িয়ে আগামী তিন মাস ১১০ কোটি ঘনফুট গ্যাস পাবে দেশের শিল্প কারখানাগুলো। এর মধ্যে শিল্পে ৫৭ কোটি এবং ক্যাপটিভে ৫৩ কোটি ঘনফুট গ্যাস বরাদ্দ রাখা হয়েছে। ইতোমধ্যে দেশের সব বিতরণ কোম্পানিকে বিষয়টি জানিয়ে দিয়েছে পেট্রোবাংলা।

2025 Bangladesh’s RMG Export Growth Slows Amid Shocks : Mohiuddin Rubel, Former Director, BGMEA Bangladesh’s export performance is clearly slowing in 2025. Exports were $35.89 billion in 2023 and rose to $38.48 billion in 2024, a strong 7.23% year‑on‑year increase. But from January to November 2025, exports reached only $35.59 billion, just 2.53% higher than the same period in 2024, whereas exports in January–November 2024 had grown by 6.23% over the same months in 2023. This shows that 2025 is trailing last year’s growth pace in both full‑year and 11‑month comparisons. Even if December 2025 performs better than recent months, overall export growth is unlikely to match 2024, and any improvement will probably be modest.

BGMEA recommends factory closures in Tongi, Gazipur on Tarique’s return day The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), an organisation of traders in the sector, has suggested declaring a holiday for ready-made garment factories in Dhaka’s Tongi and Gazipur on Dec 25, the day BNP leader Tarique Rahman is set to return to the country. In a letter sent to member factories on Tuesday, BGMEA said the presence of BNP workers and supporters will increase at Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka and surrounding areas, which may cause traffic jams.The traffic jam could disrupt goods transport and garment factory operations, so it is suggested that factories in Tongi and Gazipur remain closed that day.
