Business leaders eye $1b FDI soon; aim 10% RMG market share in Japan by 2035 The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) described the Japan-Bangladesh EPA as a historic milestone in the country’s trade diplomacy. In a statement signed by acting secretary Major (Retd) Md Saiful Islam, BGMEA also termed the upcoming US-Bangladesh trade talks scheduled for February 9 in Washington, DC, as another landmark development. The association said the EPA is the outcome of seven rounds of negotiations covering trade in goods and services and reflects a shared commitment to deepen economic engagement.From a trade perspective, BGMEA said the agreement would significantly improve market access for Bangladeshi exports, particularly RMG products, which dominate exports to Japan.

Govt to seal US trade deal tomorrow to reduce tariff Bangladesh is scheduled to sign a trade agreement with the United States tomorrow aimed at reducing reciprocal tariffs, with commitments to import more American goods to narrow a trade imbalance heavily favouring Bangladesh. Under the proposed agreement, the US will not levy tariffs on garment items made from American raw materials such as cotton and exported to American markets, according to Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman.

Signing of EPA with Japan a historic milestone in Bangladesh’s trade diplomacy: BGMEA The signing of the Bangladesh-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) marks a historic milestone in Bangladesh's trade diplomacy, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said today (7 February). "The deal ensures duty-free access for Bangladeshi garments and maintains favourable rules of origin, including single-stage processing, allowing garments to enter Japan tariff-free even after Bangladesh graduates from least developed country (LDC) status," the trade body of the country's apparel industry said in a press release.

জাপানের সঙ্গে চুক্তি ১০০ বিলিয়ন রপ্তানি লক্ষ্য অর্জনে সহায়ক হবে জাপানের সঙ্গে অর্থনৈতিক অংশীদারি চুক্তি স্বাক্ষর বাংলাদেশের তৈরি পোশাক শিল্পের জন্য এক ‘ঐতিহাসিক ধাপ’ বলে মন্তব্য করেছে বাংলাদেশ পোশাক প্রস্তুতকারক ও রপ্তানিকারক সমিতি (বিজিএমইএ)। এই চুক্তির ফলে জাপানের বাজারে বাংলাদেশের প্রবেশাধিকার শক্তিশালী হবে বলে মনে করছে সংগঠনটি। আগামী ২০৩৫ সালের মধ্যে দেশের ১০০ বিলিয়ন ডলারের রপ্তানি লক্ষ্য অর্জনে এ চৃুক্তি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখবে বলে আশা বিজিএমই’র।শনিবার (৭ ফেব্রুয়ারি) এক বিবৃতিতে বিজিএমইএ জানিয়েছে, জাপান সরকারের দীর্ঘমেয়াদী সহযোগিতা আমাদের আরএমজি খাতকে শক্তিশালী করেছে। এই চুক্তি দেশের জন্য বাজারে প্রবেশাধিকারকে আরও স্থিতিশীল ও পূর্বানুমানযোগ্য করবে। এটি শুধু একটি বাণিজ্য চুক্তি নয়, এটি দুই দেশের দীর্ঘদিনের বিশ্বাসভিত্তিক অংশীদারিত্বের স্বাভাবিক পরবর্তী ধাপ।

US lifts 25pc tariff on Indian goods linked to Russia oil purchases US President Donald Trump moved Friday to lift an additional 25 per cent tariff he imposed on goods from India over its purchases of Russian oil -- a step to implement a trade deal announced this week. "India has committed to stop directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil," according to an executive order Trump signed. New Delhi has also said that it will purchase US energy products, "and has recently committed to a framework with the United States to expand defence cooperation over the next 10 years," the order said. The additional 25 per cent US duty was set to go at 12:01 am Eastern Time on Saturday.

যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বাজারে পোশাক রপ্তানিতে নতুন শঙ্কা যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বাজারে নতুন করে বাংলাদেশের তৈরি পোশাক রপ্তানিতে শঙ্কা তৈরি হয়েছে। ভারতের পণ্যের ওপর মার্কিন পাল্টা শুল্ক কমে ১৮ শতাংশে নেমেছে, অথচ বাংলাদেশের পণ্যের ওপর শুল্ক এখনও ২০ শতাংশে আটকে আছে। এই পার্থক্যই দুই দেশের মধ্যে মূল্যগত প্রতিযোগিতায় বড় ফাঁক তৈরি করেছে। রপ্তানিকারকরা বলছেন, ভারতের তুলনায় মার্কিন বাজারে বাংলাদেশের ওপর ২ শতাংশ বেশি শুল্কের কারণে পোশাকের অর্ডার ঝুঁকির মধ্যে পড়তে পারে। অন্যদিকে ত্রয়োদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনের মাত্র তিন দিন আগে অন্তর্বর্তী সরকার যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সঙ্গে একটি শুল্ক চুক্তি করতে যাচ্ছে। আগামীকাল সোমবার যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের রাজধানী ওয়াশিংটন ডিসিতে এ চুক্তি সই হবে।
