Garment exports to EU fall 4% in seven months amid tougher competition The country's garment exports to the European Union, its largest regional market, fell by nearly 4% in the first seven months of the current financial year, as exporters faced stiffer competition and weaker global demand. Shehab Udduza Chowdhury, vice-president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), told The Business Standard, "Global apparel consumption is slow. At the same time, due to higher tariffs in the US compared to Bangladesh, China and India have negotiated orders in Europe at lower prices. As a result, we have fallen slightly behind in competition." "The nature of buyers is simple – they buy from wherever they get the lowest price. That is why we have lost some ground in that market," he added.

Consensus reached on yarn incentives for rmg industry The consensus was reached at an evaluation meeting of the Ministry of Finance’s technical committee held on Monday afternoon at the Secretariat. After the meeting, BGMEA Vice-President Shehab Udduza Chowdhury told New Age that raising the incentive to 5 per cent would make locally produced yarn commercially viable for RMG exporters. ‘If the incentive is increased, RMG manufacturers would no longer need to import yarn for a few cents’ price advantage, which would significantly improve the competitiveness of domestic textile mills,’ he said. However, he noted that the government has expressed concerns about its fiscal capacity, stating that even a 3.5 per cent increase would put additional pressure on expenditure. He also said that higher incentives could help revive a large number of idle factories—about 350 RMG factories and nearly 50 textile mills—bringing many back into operation.

This would generate employment and increase tax and revenue collection, ultimately benefiting the government, he added.

ইপিএ চুক্তি: সেবা খাতে জাপানের ভালো বিনিয়োগ প্রত্যাশা বাংলাদেশের অর্থনৈতিক অংশীদারত্ব চুক্তির (ইপিএ) আওতায় জাপানকে ৯৮টি সেবা খাতে শুল্কমুক্ত প্রবেশাধিকার দিয়েছে বাংলাদেশ। বিপরীতে বাংলাদেশকে ১২০টি সেবা খাতে শুল্কমুক্ত প্রবেশাধিকার দিয়েছে জাপান। এতে বাংলাদেশের সেবা খাতে জাপানের ভালো বিনিয়োগ আসবে বলে প্রত্যাশা করছে বাণিজ্য মন্ত্রণালয়। সোমবার (৯ ফেব্রুয়ারি) সচিবালয়ে জাপানের সঙ্গে সই হওয়া ইপিএ চুক্তি নিয়ে বাণিজ্য মন্ত্রণালয় আয়োজিত এক সংবাদ সম্মেলনে এসব কথা জানানো হয়। মাহবুবুর রহমান বলেন, চুক্তির একটি বিশেষ দিক আছে গার্মেন্টস পণ্য নিয়ে। গার্মেন্টসের ক্ষেত্রে আমরা এখনো শুল্কমুক্ত প্রবেশাধিকার পাই। এ চুক্তির পরও আমরা এক ধাপ মূল্য সংযোজন করে রপ্তানি করতে পারব, যেটা আগেও পেয়েছি। কাপড় আমদানি করে পোশাক তৈরি করে রপ্তানি করা যাবে।

RMG exports to major destinations plunge Regarding nontraditional markets, Mohiuddin Rubel, former director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said Bangladesh is lagging behind due to a lack of innovation, research and development, and technology adoption. Moreover, due to US tariffs, competitors aggressively shifted their exports to nontraditional markets, including Bangladesh.‘Because, we label them as nontraditional, but Vietnam considers Japan as one of their major destinations, which impacted our exports,’ he added, saying that Bangladesh still focuses on the EU and US, urging market diversification. Regarding the national election scheduled for February 12, Rubel said that, as businesspeople, they expect the incoming government to provide an environment of the rule of law, a stable law-and-order situation, and business-centric policies.

US cuts Bangladesh tariff to 19%, no duty on RMG made of US cotton The US has reduced the reciprocal tariff on Bangladeshi exports to 19% following the signing of a bilateral trade agreement under which Bangladesh RMG exports made of cotton and synthetic fibers imported from America will enjoy zero reciprocal duty, Commerce Secretary Mahbubur Rahman said today (9 February). Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin and US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer signed the agreement on behalf of the respective country in Washington around 10pm Bangladesh time today, the commerce secretary told The Business Standard.

মার্কিন তুলায় শুল্কমুক্ত সুবিধা পাবে বাংলাদেশ, কমবে ভারত নির্ভরতা এ বিষয়ে বিজিএমইএর সাবেক পরিচালক মহিউদ্দিন রুবেল বাংলা ট্রিবিউনকে বলেন, “চুক্তির মাধ্যমে পাওয়া সুবিধা নিঃসন্দেহে আশাব্যঞ্জক। বাংলাদেশের তৈরি পোশাক খাত দীর্ঘদিন ধরেই যুক্তরাষ্ট্র থেকে উল্লেখযোগ্য পরিমাণ তুলা আমদানি করে আসছে। নতুন ব্যবস্থায় যুক্তরাষ্ট্র থেকে আমদানি করা তুলা ব্যবহার করে তৈরি পোশাক রফতানিতে আর কোনও পাল্টা শুল্ক আরোপ হবে না, যা উদ্যোক্তাদের জন্য বড় স্বস্তির বিষয়।”মহিউদ্দিন রুবেলের মতে, এই সুযোগ কাজে লাগিয়ে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র থেকে তুলা আমদানি আরও বাড়বে এবং এর ইতিবাচক প্রভাব সরাসরি রফতানিতে পড়বে। ফলে আগামী দিনে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বাজারে বাংলাদেশের তৈরি পোশাক রফতানি উল্লেখযোগ্য হারে বাড়বে বলেও তিনি আশা প্রকাশ করেন।

সুদহার অপরিবর্তিত রেখে মুদ্রানীতি ঘোষণা মূল্যস্ফীতি নিয়ন্ত্রণের কৌশল মাথায় রেখে আগের ধারা অনুসরণ করেই বছরের প্রথম ছয় মাসের মুদ্রানীতি ঘোষণা করেছে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক। নতুন মুদ্রানীতিতে নীতিসুদ হারে কোনো পরিবর্তন আসেনি। মূল্যস্ফীতি কমে কাঙ্ক্ষিত মাত্রায় না আসা পর্যন্ত নীতি সুদহার নামিয়ে না আনার আভাস আগে থেকেই ছিল। সবশেষ জানুয়ারি মাসে পয়েন্ট টু পয়েন্ট ভিত্তিতে সার্বিক মূল্যস্ফীতি হয় ৮ দশমিক ৫৮ শতাংশ; ডিসেম্বরে যা ছিল ৮ দশমিক ২৯ শতাংশ। সোমবার কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকে জানুয়ারি-জুন মাসের জন্য মুদ্রানীতি ঘোষণা করে গভর্নর আহসান এইচ মনসুর বলেন, ‘মূল্যস্ফীতি ৭ শতাংশে নামি আনা ছাড়া বাকি সূচকগুলোতে মুদ্রানীতি সফল হয়েছে। উই ডু এক্সিলেন্ট (আমরা সর্বোচ্চ ভালো করেছি), শুধু মূল্যস্ফীতি নিয়ন্ত্রণে ব্যর্থ হয়েছে।

RMG exports down 2.4% y-on-y in first 7 months of fiscal Bangladesh’s readymade garment (RMG) exports declined by 2.43 percent year-on-year to US$22.98 billion during July–January of fiscal year 2025–26, according to the latest country-wise export data published by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). The European Union (EU) remained the country’s largest export destination for RMG, accounting for 49.35 percent of total exports in the category. Export earnings from the EU stood at US$11.34 billion, marking a 3.98 percent year-on-year decline, said former BGMEA director Mohiuddin Rubel.
