BGMEA felicitates Tarique Rahman on BNP’s landslide victory The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) today extended heartfelt congratulations to BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman on the party’s historic landslide victory in the 13th National Parliamentary Election. In a congratulatory message, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan lauded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for securing more than a two-thirds majority in the polls under the “unique and visionary leadership” of Tarique Rahman. “On behalf of BGMEA, I convey our sincere and heartfelt congratulations to you and to leaders and activists of all levels of the party for this unprecedented and sweeping victory,” the message said.

তৈরি পোশাক রপ্তানি ১০০ বিলিয়ন ডলার করতে নতুন সরকারের সহযোগিতা চান মালিকেরা আগামী ২০৩০ সালের মধ্যে পোশাক রপ্তানি ১০০ বিলিয়ন ডলারে উন্নীত করার জাতীয় লক্ষ্য অর্জনে সরকারের পূর্ণ সহযোগিতার প্রত্যাশা করেছে তৈরি পোশাক খাতের মালিকদের সংগঠন বাংলাদেশ পোশাক প্রস্তুতকারক ও রপ্তানিকারক সমিতি (বিজিএমইএ)। একই সাথে ‘মেইড ইন বাংলাদেশ’ ব্র্যান্ডকে বিশ্ববাজারে শ্রেষ্ঠত্বের প্রতীক হিসেবে প্রতিষ্ঠার আশাবাদও জানিয়েছে সংগঠনটি। ত্রয়োদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনে ঐতিহাসিক বিজয় অর্জন করায় তারেক রহমানের নেতৃত্বাধীন বাংলাদেশ জাতীয়তাবাদী দল-বিএনপিকে অভিনন্দন জানিয়েছে এক চিঠিতে এই আশা ব্যক্ত করে বিজিএমইএ। শনিবার বিজিএমইএ সভাপতি মাহমুদ হাসান খান স্বাক্ষরিত ওই অভিনন্দন বার্তায় বলা হয়, ‘তারেক রহমানের অনন্য ও দূরদর্শী নেতৃত্বে বিএনপি দুই-তৃতীয়াংশের অধিক আসনে যে অভূতপূর্ব ও নিরঙ্কুশ বিজয় অর্জন করেছে, তা দেশের গণতান্ত্রিক ইতিহাসে এক অবিস্মরণীয় মাইলফলক। এ বিজয়ের মাধ্যমে দেশের আপামর জনতার গণ রায়ের প্রতিফলন ঘটেছে।’

US trade deal: devil hidden in the fine print “The US will not waive the previous duty that was in place before signing the deal,” said Mahmud Hasan Khan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). He explained with a simple example: if a US retailer buys a T-shirt from Bangladesh for $2, the 19 percent reciprocal tariff may be removed if US cotton or man-made fibre is used. But the export will still face the basic 16.50 percent duty. So, even with the concession, the cost of entering the US market remains high.Another issue, according to trade analysts, is the unclear wording of the concession. Article 5.3 of the agreement says the US will create a system for “zero reciprocal tariffs”, but only for a “to-be-specified volume” of imports. This limit will depend directly on how much US cotton and man-made fibre Bangladesh imports. In simple terms, the duty benefit is not unlimited -- it is tied to the amount of raw materials Bangladesh buys from the US.This effectively means that for every dollar of tariff the US removes, the benefit goes back to its own cotton producers. “We are waiting for clarification as we need further interpretation of how this method will work,” Khan told The Daily Star, noting that many details remain unclear.

Rebuilding business confidence cannot wait Although the BNP swept to a landslide victory in the February 12 national election, business leaders say the new government will inherit an economy that allows little time for celebration. According to them, the first 100 days will decide whether the private sector regains its footing or sinks deeper into paralysis after months of political and economic drift.“The incoming government must prioritise restoring business confidence within its first 100 days,” said Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury Parvez, president of the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries. He said prolonged uncertainty has seriously dampened investment. Without swift and decisive steps to ensure stability and policy clarity, private sector expansion will remain stalled, he said.

Anwar-ul-Alam Chowdhury, President of the BCI, said respect for businesspeople was essential. “They are too often branded wholesale as dishonest. Yet to expand the economy, the government must work with them,” he said. Former BGMEA director Mohiuddin Rubel said the export sector cannot survive without stability. “Foreign buyers want to know how reliable the supply chain is. If the new government strengthens economic diplomacy and swiftly undertakes structural reforms in power, energy and banking, confidence will grow,” he said.

RMG exports to EU grow 5.97pc in 2025 amid rising competition Bangladesh's readymade garment (RMG) exports to the European Union (EU) recorded 5.97 per cent year-on-year growth in 2025, according to Eurostat data. Mohiuddin Rubel, additional managing director of Denim Expert Ltd, said Bangladesh's RMG exports to EU grew last year both in value and volume (10.20 per cent) while unit prices fell by 3.84 per cent. Other countries like China, India, Pakistan, Vietnam and Cambodia also showed a positive growth trend throughout the year. Citing data, he said the unit price of Chinese apparel decreased by 9.38 per cent against an impressive 11.64 per cent and 1.17 per cent increase in volume and value. This trend highlighted China's strategic focus on the European market amidst challenges in the US market, he noted.

আমদানি হিস্যা ভারত ভিয়েতনাম কম্বোডিয়ার চেয়ে অনেক বেশি হলেও বাংলাদেশের প্রবৃদ্ধি কম বাংলাদেশ পোশাক প্রস্তুতকারক ও রফতানিকারক সমিতির (বিজিএমইএ) সাবেক পরিচালক মো. মহিউদ্দিন রুবেল বণিক বার্তাকে বলেন, ‘ইইউর দেশগুলোতে বাংলাদেশের শেয়ার অনেক বড়। যে দেশগুলোর সঙ্গে প্রবৃদ্ধি তুলনা করা হচ্ছে সেই দেশগুলোর শেয়ার অনেক কম। এ দেশগুলোর শেয়ার কম হলেও দেশগুলো থেকে আমদানিতে প্রবৃদ্ধি সামান্য বাড়লেও শতাংশ হিসেবে তা অনেক বেশি দেখা যায়। আর বাংলাদেশ থেকে ১৮ থেকে ২০ বিলিয়ন ইউরোর পোশাক আমদানিতে ৫ শতাংশ প্রবৃদ্ধি হলেও সেটার প্রভাব অনেক বেশি। বাংলাদেশ থেকে আমদানি প্রবৃদ্ধি যদি ১০ শতাংশ হতো তাহলে হয়তো গোটা বাজারই আমাদের দখলে থাকতে পারত। সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে বৈশ্বিক এবং অভ্যন্তরীণ কারণে পণ্য সরবরাহ কিছুটা নড়বড়ে হয়েছে। তারপরও সামগ্রিকভাবে খুব বেশি খারাপ না। ধারণা করছি পরিস্থিতি বদলাবে। ক্রেতারা হয়তো এখন কমফোর্টেবল হবে ক্রয়াদেশ দিতে।

শিল্পের ক্ষত সারাতে ‘দাওয়াই’ চান উদ্যোক্তারা শিল্পের রক্তক্ষরণ থামাতে সুস্পষ্ট নীতিগত দিকনির্দেশনা, বাস্তবসম্মত কর্মপরিকল্পনা ও দীর্ঘমেয়াদি সংস্কার পরিকল্পনা চান উদ্যোক্তারা। বিসিআই সভাপতি আনোয়ার-উল-আলম চৌধুরী বলেন, ‘ব্যবসায়ীদের সম্মানটা অত্যন্ত জরুরি। সব সময় ঢালাওভাবে বলা হয় যে ব্যবসায়ীরা সব চোর-বাটপার। কিন্তু অর্থনীতিকে বড় করতে হলে ব্যবসায়ীদের সঙ্গে নিয়ে কাজ করা উচিত।’বাংলাদেশ তৈরি পোশাক প্রস্তুত ও রপ্তানিকারক সমিতির (বিজিএমইএ) সাবেক পরিচালক মহিউদ্দিন রুবেল বলেন, ‘রপ্তানি খাত স্থিতিশীলতা ছাড়া টিকে থাকতে পারে না। বিদেশি ক্রেতারা জানতে চান সরবরাহ চেইন কতটা নির্ভরযোগ্য। নতুন সরকার যদি দ্রুত অর্থনৈতিক কূটনীতি জোরদার করে এবং পাশাপাশি যদি কাঠামোগত সংস্কার যেমন—বিদ্যুৎ, জ্বালানি, ব্যাংকিং ইত্যাদি খাতে দ্রুত কাজ করে তাহলে আস্থা বাড়বে।’

Apparel exports to EU grow 6% in 2025 Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) former director Mohiuddin Rubel stated that China notably increased its apparel exports to the EU to €26.58 billion, marking 1.17% growth in value, a 9.38% decline in unit price, and an impressive 11.64% increase in volume, highlighting its strategic focus on the European market amidst challenges in the US market. Rubel, also additional managing director of Denim Expert Ltd, informed that Turkey faced a 10.73% decrease in its apparel exports to the EU, amounting to €8.34 billion, while Vietnam recorded 9.66% growth, reaching €4.38 billion in exports with a 4.51% increase in unit price.
