Bangladesh seeks to delay LDC graduation: A feasible strategy? Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said the government’s initiative is timely and necessary. However, diplomatic efforts must be strengthened to make the application effective. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, and relevant departments must work actively so that no country raises objections to the proposal.Former BGMEA director and additional managing director of Denim Expert Limited, Mohiuddin Rubel, said that without coordination between diplomatic and trade policies, it will be difficult to fully enjoy the benefits of LDC graduation. Diplomatic efforts must be further strengthened to retain market access in major markets such as the European Union, United States, United Kingdom, and Canada.

Govt to seek clarity as us court strikes down trump tariffs The Bangladesh government would seek official clarification from the United States following a their Supreme Court ruling that struck down Trump’s reciprocal tariffs, saying tariff decisions can only be made by the congress. Stakeholders said that the latest development might create room for Bangladesh to renegotiate its trade arrangement with Washington. Anwar-ul Alam Chowdhury, president of the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries, stressed that the situation remains temporary and unpredictable. Mohiuddin Rubel, former director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said Bangladesh should enter into mutual negotiations on the agreement.‘In ART, Bangladesh provided many concessions, which should be revisited,’ he added, saying that Bangladesh should negotiate for less than 19 per cent or 19 per cent by gaining some more advantages.

মার্কিন বাজার নিয়ে দুশ্চিন্তা, কৌশলে এগোনোর পরামর্শ জানতে চাইলে স্প্যারো গ্রুপ অব ইন্ডাস্ট্রির ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক (এমডি) শোভন ইসলাম প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, ‘১৯ শতাংশের চেয়ে ১৫ শতাংশ শুল্ক ভালো। যদিও অনিশ্চয়তা থাকবে। তারপরও ভালোর দিকেই যাচ্ছে বলে মনে হচ্ছে। পাল্টা শুল্ক আরোপের পর পণ্যের দাম বেড়েছিল। শুল্ক কমলে মার্কিন ক্রেতাদের ক্রয়ক্ষমতা বাড়বে। তাতে পণ্যের চাহিদা ও রপ্তানি বাড়তে পারে।’ তিনি আরও বলেন, মার্কিন বাজারে শুল্কহার প্রতিযোগী দেশগুলোর কাছাকাছি থাকলেই বাংলাদেশের সুযোগ থাকবে। তার কারণ, চীন থেকে ক্রয়াদেশ সরবেই। একই সঙ্গে চাহিদা অনুযায়ী জ্বালানি, বন্দরের সক্ষমতা বৃদ্ধি, প্রয়োজনীয় অবকাঠামো ইত্যাদিও নিশ্চিত করতে হবে বলে মনে করেন তিনি।

UN panel begins talks today on LDC deferral Bangladesh’s plea for deferment of graduation from the group of Least Developed Countries (LDC) category is likely to be discussed at the five-day meeting of the UN Committee for Development Policy (CDP) beginning in New York today.Before leaving the country to attend the meeting, Debapriya Bhattacharya, head of the Enhanced Monitoring Mechanism (EMM), a body of the UN CDP, said they will set up an evaluation process for Bangladesh’s plea for LDC deferment for three more years.

Govt awaits US notification Experts think the latest developments may create room for Bangladesh to renegotiate its trade arrangement with Washington, as the US apex court has struck down the Trump administration's reciprocal tariffs. They made these observations Sunday while talking with The Financial Express as the US President, Donald Trump, has raised duty to a flat 15 per cent after the court rejected the validity of reciprocal tariff framework that upset world trade regime. Shovon Islam, Managing Director of Sparrow Group, says that so far, all countries have to face an equal tariff of 15 per cent. He holds the hope that the government would renegotiate with the United States to secure a more favourable rate for Bangladesh, helping make its exports more competitive.

নতুন সরকারের প্রথম বাজেটের জন্য ব্যবসায়ীদের মতামত চেয়েছে এনবিআর আগামী ২০২৬-২৭ অর্থবছরের জাতীয় বাজেটে আয়কর-সম্পর্কিত বিভিন্ন আইন ও বিধি সংশোধন, সংযোজন বা পরিবর্তনের জন্য দেশের বিভিন্ন খাতের ব্যবসায়ী প্রতিনিধিদের কাছ থেকে প্রস্তাব ও সুপারিশ আহ্বান করেছে জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড (এনবিআর)। বিভিন্ন চেম্বার ও অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের কাছে ইতিমধ্যে তাদের প্রস্তাব ও সুপারিশ চেয়ে চিঠি পাঠিয়েছে এনবিআর। করব্যবস্থাকে আরও যুগোপযোগী ও অংশীদারত্বমূলক করার লক্ষ্যে ২০২৬-২৭ অর্থবছরের বাজেট প্রণয়নের কাজ ইতিমধ্যে শুরু হয়েছে এনবিআর। এটি নতুন সরকারের প্রথম বাজেট।

সম্পাদকীয়: এলডিসি পরবর্তী চ্যালেঞ্জ স্বল্পোন্নত দেশের (এলডিসি) তালিকা থেকে চূড়ান্ত উত্তরণের নির্ধারিত সময়সীমা আরও তিন বছর বাড়ানোর জন্য জাতিসংঘের কাছে আবেদন করেছে নতুন সরকার। বর্তমান বৈশ্বিক অর্থনৈতিক অস্থিরতা, উচ্চ মূল্যস্ফীতি এবং অভ্যন্তরীণ সংস্কার কার্যক্রম সুসংহত করার যুক্তিতে ২০২৯ সাল পর্যন্ত এই সময় চেয়েছে বাংলাদেশ। সরকারের এ সিদ্ধান্তকে যৌক্তিক মনে করছেন অর্থনীতিবিদরা। জাতিসংঘে পাঠানো ইআরডি সচিবের চিঠিতে সামষ্টিক অর্থনৈতিক স্থিতিশীলতা এবং ‘স্মুথ ট্রানজিশন স্ট্র্যাটেজি’ (এসটিএস) বাস্তবায়নের যে প্রয়োজনীয়তা উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে, তা বর্তমান প্রেক্ষাপটে অত্যন্ত প্রাসঙ্গিক।

যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের পাল্টা শুল্ক নিয়ে অনিশ্চয়তা কাটেনি যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের পাল্টা শুল্ক বাতিলের খবর অনেকের কাছে স্বস্তির হলেও এ নিয়ে বাংলাদেশের জন্য অনিশ্চয়তা রয়ে গেছে। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সুপ্রিমকোর্ট পারস্পরিক শুল্ক বাতিল করার পর প্রেসিডেন্ট ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্প নতুন করে ১৫০ দিনের জন্য ১০ শতাংশ শুল্ক আরোপের ঘোষণা দিয়েছেন। তাতে স্বল্পমেয়াদে কিছুটা স্বস্তি পেয়েছিলেন বাংলাদেশের পোশাক রপ্তানিকারকরা। তবে ২৪ ঘণ্টার ব্যবধানেই সেই শুল্ক বাড়িয়ে ১৫ শতাংশ করার ঘোষণায় তৈরি হয়েছে অনিশ্চয়তা। অবশ্য এই শুল্ক এখনও বাংলাদেশ-যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের বাণিজ্যচুক্তিতে নির্ধারিত ১৯ শতাংশের চেয়ে কম।
