BB Governor assures policy support to resolve RMG crisis Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Dr Ahsan H. Mansur today assured the leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) of providing necessary policy support to overcome the current challenges facing the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector. The governor gave the assurance during an emergency meeting with a BGMEA delegation, led by Senior Vice-President Inamul Haque Khan and Vice-President Md Shihab Uddoja Chowdhury, at the Bangladesh Bank headquarters in the city, said a BGMEA press release. The primary focus of the discussion was to address the liquidity crisis in the garment industry and ensure the timely payment of salaries and bonuses to workers ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr. Responding to the concerns raised by the RMG leaders, Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur stated that the central bank would take positive steps to mitigate the liquidity shortage so that factories can fulfill their financial obligations to workers before the festival.

Bangladesh exports RMG worth $8.2b to US in 2025 Exporters said Bangladesh did quite well in 2025 amid a declining US imports driven by tariff-related tensions, weaker demand, and uncertainty. Mohiuddin Rubel, former director of the BGMEA, said that growth in the second half of the year was weaker than in the first half for the overall US market. In particular, imports during the last three months of 2025 were lower than expected, he added, noting that even in this uncertain environment, with reciprocal tariffs and declining overall demand, Bangladesh performed quite well. Mahmud Hasan Khan, president of BGMEA, said reciprocal tariffs for Bangladesh were lower than those for China and India, which put it in an advantageous position in early 2025. Moreover, orders for China shifted to other countries, and some also came from Bangladesh, which accelerated the exports. He also expressed hope that Bangladesh could do better if the newly elected government provided the necessary policy support, including uninterrupted gas and electricity supply, reduced bank interest rates, higher efficiency at the Chittagong port, and a stable law-and-order situation.

Bangladesh rethinking deal after blanket 10pc US tariffs : Stakeholders' meet today Bangladesh begins rethink on the deal signed with the United States as President Donald Trump lately imposed an across-the-board 10-percent tariff on all goods not covered by exemptions. Reacting to the Supreme Court ruling invalidating his most sweeping duties, the US President announced a new temporary global tariff of 10 per cent for a period of 150 days. In the Proclamation, he also announced that the 10-percent tariff will come into effect on February 24, 2026.

BGMEA seeks release of cash incentives to ensure workers’ salaries before Eid Garment exporters today urged the central bank governor to release funds from the export incentive so that factories can pay workers’ salaries and bonuses ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. Leaders of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) made this plea to Ahsan H Mansur, governor of Bangladesh Bank (BB), during a meeting at the BB office in Dhaka. A large number of applications for cash incentives remain pending due to complexities in lien bank and Bangladesh Bank audit processes. In the 2025-26 fiscal year, approximately Tk 5,700 crore in incentives for the textile and garment sector remain unsettled. Quick disbursement of these funds would help ease the liquidity crisis faced by factories, BGMEA said in a statement after the meeting.The meeting was attended by BGMEA Senior Vice President Inamul Haq Khan and Vice President Md Shehab Udduza Chowdhury.

শুল্ক নিয়ে বৈশ্বিক বাণিজ্যে অনিশ্চয়তা আরও বাড়ল পোশাক প্রস্তুত ও রপ্তানিকারকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএর সহ-সভাপতি এনামুল হক খান বাবলু সমকালকে বলেন, পারস্পরিক শুল্ক যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের সুপ্রিম কোর্ট বাতিল করেছেন। এটা আর ফিরে আসবে না, যা বড় স্বস্তি। নতুন করে বাড়তি ১০ শতাংশ শুল্ক আরোপের বিষয়ে জানতে চাইলে তিনি বলেন, এটিও সমস্যা না। কারণ, এ শুল্ক হার সব দেশের জন্য প্রযোজ্য। এ শুল্কও শেষ পর্যন্ত টিকবে না। তিনি বলেন, প্রতিযোগী দেশগুলোর তুলনায় আমাদের পণ্যে একই শুল্ক হার বজায় থাকলে আমাদেরই লাভ বেশি। কারণ, তৈরি পোশাকে আমাদের সক্ষমতা বেশি। গত চার দশকে এ শিল্প অনেক ‘ম্যাচিউরড’ হয়েছে। আমরা অন্য দেশের তুলনায় অনেক বেশি কমপ্লায়েন্ট।

ঈদে বেতন-বোনাস দিতে স্বল্প সুদে ঋণ চান পোশাক মালিকরা ঈদুল ফিতরের আগে শ্রমিকদের বেতন ও বোনাস পরিশোধে সম্ভাব্য চাপ মোকাবেলায় বকেয়া নগদ প্রণোদনার অর্থ দ্রুত ছাড় এবং দুই মাসের বেতনের সমপরিমাণ স্বল্প সুদে ঋণ (সফট লোন) চেয়েছে তৈরি পোশাক মালিকদের সংগঠন বাংলাদেশ তৈরি পোশাক প্রস্তুত ও রপ্তানিকারক সমিতি (বিজিএমইএ)। এ বিষয়ে বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের গভর্নর ড. আহসান এইচ মনসুরের কাছে চিঠি দিয়েছে সংগঠনটি। গতকাল মঙ্গলবার বিজিএমইএর দুই সদস্যের প্রতিনিধিদল (সিনিয়র সহসভাপতি এনামুল হক খান বাবলু এবং সহসভাপতি শিহাব উদ্দোজা চৌধুরী) গভর্নরের সঙ্গে সাক্ষাৎ করে তাঁর হাতে চিঠি তুলে দেয়। সাক্ষাৎ শেষে শিহাব উদ্দোজা চৌধুরী সাংবাদিকদের বলেন, তৈরি পোশাক খাতটির প্রায় পাঁচ হাজার ৭০০ কোটি টাকার নগদ প্রণোদনা এখনো বকেয়া রয়েছে।

ট্রাম্পের নতুন বৈশ্বিক শুল্ক কার্যকর হলো ১০ শতাংশ হারে মার্কিন প্রেসিডেন্ট ডোনাল্ড ট্রাম্পের নতুন বৈশ্বিক শুল্ক কার্যকর হয়েছে ১০ শতাংশ হারে। যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের কাস্টমস কর্তৃপক্ষের এক নোটিসে জানানো হয়েছে, স্থানীয় সময় মঙ্গলবার রাত ১২টা ১ মিনিট থেকে ১০ শতাংশের এ শুল্ক বলবৎ হয়েছে। গত শুক্রবার ট্রাম্পের আরোপিত পাল্টা শুল্ক অবৈধ ঘোষণা করে রায় দেন সুপ্রিম কোর্ট। এর মাত্র কয়েক ঘণ্টা পরই এক নির্বাহী আদেশে মঙ্গলবার থেকে ১০ শতাংশ শুল্ক কার্যকরের নির্দেশ দেন ট্রাম্প। এর পরদিন অর্থাৎ গত শনিবার তিনি এ হার বাড়িয়ে ১৫ শতাংশ করারও হুমকি দেন। হোয়াইট হাউজ জানিয়েছে, ১৫ শতাংশে উন্নীত করার পরিকল্পনা এখনো বহাল আছে। তবে তা কার্যকরের নির্দিষ্ট সময়সূচি জানানো হয়নি।

BGMEA seeks 2-month loan to pay wages before Eid Ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, the readymade garment sector is facing a severe liquidity crisis. In this situation, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has appealed to the governor to provide a loan equivalent to two months on easy terms as short-term wage support to ensure payment of salaries, allowances and bonuses to workers. In a letter sent to the Bangladesh Bank Governor on Tuesday (February 24), the organization's acting president Enamul Haque Khan said that export earnings are continuously declining due to geopolitical instability, global recession and the ongoing tariff war. Factories are under pressure due to reduced work orders, deferred shipments and delayed orders.
