BGMEA warns factories after Indian buyer fails to clear export bill
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has asked its member factories to refrain from doing business with four Indian companies as one of the buyers allegedly failed to pay for goods already shipped. When asked, BGMEA president Mahmud Hasan Khan said the association had repeatedly attempted to resolve the matter amicably and contacted senior officials of the four companies on several occasions. "But they did not pay the local factory," he said.

US-Israel-Iran war sparks export fears in Dhaka
The ongoing US-Israel conflict targeting Iran has triggered fresh uncertainty for Bangladesh’s trade sector, particularly its readymade garment (RMG) exporters, raising concerns over future performance. BGMEA Director Faisal Samad told Daily Sun that the conflict has created instability and uncertainty for foreign trade, particularly in RMG exports. “Our major vessels to the EU and Middle East pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Initially, our export lead times will be delayed, but if the situation escalates, our exports could be severely affected,” he said, adding that broader economic instability may follow. Former BGMEA Director Mohiuddin Rubel warned that inflation is likely to rise due to the conflict, which could reduce orders and heighten global instability. He described the Strait of Hormuz as “a narrow but crucial waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the rest of the world” and “the most important global energy chokepoint.”

Iran conflict threatens vital trade routes or Bangladesh
Faruque Hassan, former president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said that the war would have multiple impacts on international trade, as most of Bangladesh’s air routes have been closed due to the conflict. ‘The prolonged conflict would create further difficulties for us as it started at a time when we had been waiting for a business revival,’ he added. Shovon Islam, managing director of Sparrow Group, echoed similar concerns, describing the situation as a source of prolonged uncertainty. He said the confrontation could escalate into a drawn-out conflict, heightening risks to global commerce. Former BGMEA director Mohiuddin Rubel said that any disruption or tension in the Hormuz Strait could raise global oil and gas prices, increasing Bangladesh’s fuel import costs, putting pressure on its electricity generation, trade balance, and overall inflation, and, in turn, slowing economic growth.

Exporters fear longer lead times, higher costs
Businesses say prolonged instability may suspend flights through major Gulf transit hubs, delay cargo movement, inflate freight charges, and disrupt energy supplies, thus putting fresh pressure on an already fragile external trade sector. Faruque Hassan, former president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), says the conflict could have multi-layered impacts, particularly as several regional air routes remain disrupted. "The prolonged conflict will create further difficulties at a time when we were expecting a business rebound," he said, expressing hope for a swift resolution. Shovon Islam, managing director of Sparrow Group, also warned of prolonged uncertainty in global commerce.Former BGMEA director Mohiuddin Rubel cautioned that tensions in the Strait of Hormuz could push up global oil and gas prices. Higher fuel import bills would increase pressure on electricity generation costs, trade balance, and inflation, potentially slowing overall economic growth, he said.
