Trade, investment hit hard by Middle East-driven energy shock Mahmud Hasan Khan, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said the sector is struggling with frequent load-shedding across major industrial zones such as Gazipur and Ashulia. “Factories are facing severe power shortages, and even diesel supplies for generators are inadequate. As a result, shipments are being delayed,” he said. He also expressed concern over rising raw material costs linked to the Middle East crisis, noting that additional overtime is required to offset production losses.

War exposes critical gaps in Bangladesh’s energy sector The war in the Middle East has exposed weaknesses in Bangladesh’s energy sector, highlighting long-standing gaps in planning and implementation, speakers said at an event.The event, titled “Navigating the Global Energy Shock: Impact on Bangladesh and Way Forward”, was organised by the DCCI, in collaboration with the Bangladesh Sustainable and Renewable Energy Association and the Infrastructure Development Company Limited, at the DCCI auditorium. Vidiya Amrit Khan, vice-president of BGMEA, said that in Europe, widespread solar power use has helped reduce the impact of the energy crisis. “But the situation in Bangladesh is very different,” she added, calling for better coordination among government agencies in the power sector and expressing concern over the lack of initiatives to address challenges following the country’s LDC (least developed country) graduation.

রপ্তানিকারকদের ঋণ দিতে পাঁচ হাজার কোটি টাকার তহবিল রপ্তানিকারকদের জন্য আবার কম সুদের প্রি­-শিপমেন্ট ঋণ চালু করল বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংক। কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকে বিদ্যমান ১০ হাজার কোটি টাকার রপ্তানি সহায়ক প্রাক-অর্থায়ন তহবিল থেকে এ খাতের জন্য ৫ হাজার কোটি টাকা বরাদ্দ দেওয়া হয়েছে। ব্যাংকগুলো ২ শতাংশ সুদে তহবিল নিয়ে গ্রাহক পর্যায়ে সর্বোচ্চ ৫ শতাংশ সুদে বিতরণ করবে। রপ্তানি পণ্য জাহাজীকরণের আগের খরচ মেটাতে ব্যবসায়ীরা এ ধরনের ঋণ নিতে পারবেন। বৃহস্পতিবার এ সংক্রান্ত নির্দেশনা সব ব্যাংকে পাঠানো হয়।

ক্ষতির মুখে ব্যবসায়ীরা, ঝুঁকিতে কর্মসংস্থান ব্যবসায়ীদের অভিযোগ, একদিকে বিপুল পরিমাণ খেলাপি ঋণের কারণে ব্যাংকগুলো চাপে রয়েছে, অপরদিকে, কোভিড মহামারির সময় থেকে সৃষ্ট ধারাবাহিক নানা সংকট এবং উচ্চ সুদ হারের কারণে অনেক প্রকৃত ব্যবসাও চরম সংকটে পড়েছে। এ প্রসঙ্গে বিজিএমইএ’র সাবেক পরিচালক মহিউদ্দিন রুবেল বলেন, “বাংলাদেশের হাজার হাজার তৈরি পোশাক কারখানাকে কেন্দ্র করেই দেশে ব্যাংক ও বিমা খাতের বিস্তার ঘটেছে। গার্মেন্টস খাতের লেনদেন থেকেই ব্যাংকগুলো প্রতিনিয়ত কমিশন আয় করছে— এলসি খোলা, বিভিন্ন ধরনের লেনদেন কিংবা ঋণ বিতরণ— প্রতিটি ক্ষেত্রেই ব্যাংক কমিশন নিচ্ছে। ঋণের ক্ষেত্রে উচ্চ সুদের পাশাপাশি অতিরিক্ত কমিশনের চাপও রয়েছে, যা অনেকটা ‘শাঁখের করাতের’ মতো পরিস্থিতি তৈরি করেছে।”

Middle East war may dent Bangladesh’s growth, RMG output and exports: Sanem The war in the Middle East could weigh on Bangladesh’s economy, disrupting output in key sectors, particularly the readymade garment (RMG) industry, according to a study by the South Asian Network on Economic Modelling (Sanem). Releasing the findings of a simulation study today, Sanem said supply disruptions of oil and gas from the Middle East and a surge in energy prices amid the US-Israel conflict with Iran could affect transport, energy-intensive manufacturing, and food production.

RMG exports to major markets fall in July-Mar Exporters said that exports had been declining over the past eight months due to weak global demand, fewer buyer inquiries, shifts in buying patterns, geopolitical tensions and intense competition, particularly on European markets. They also expressed concerns that prolonged conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz could negatively impact the global economy again. Mohiuddin Rubel, former director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said the data indicated a recalibration of global consumption patterns rather than a sector-wide crisis. ‘Traditional buyers are optimising their sourcing strategies, which is an invitation to strengthen relationships and demonstrate competitive value beyond price,’ he added.
