Rooftop solar can meet up to 14% of RMG factories' electricity demand: Study A new study has found that rooftop solar installations could potentially meet up to 14% of total electricity demand in Bangladesh's ready-made garment sector, according to a survey conducted by Mapped in Bangladesh (MiB) covering 878 export-oriented garment factories.The report was launched at an event held at a hotel in Banani, Dhaka today (19 May). Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) director Sheikh Mustafiz said there is no alternative for SME entrepreneurs in the ready-made garment sector but to adopt renewable energy, including solar power, due to growing pressure from global buyers. However, he identified financing as one of the major barriers. "If entrepreneurs fail to shift to renewable energy, they will face serious challenges in the future. Major buyers, including H&M, have set targets for their supplier factories to reduce carbon emissions by 25%," he said.

সৌরবিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদনে বিশ্বে এগিয়ে চীন, দ্রুত এগোচ্ছে ভারত-যুক্তরাষ্ট্র বিশ্বজুড়ে নবায়নযোগ্য জ্বালানির প্রসারে সৌরবিদ্যুৎ এখন সবচেয়ে দ্রুত বর্ধনশীল খাত। বিশেষ করে চীন, যুক্তরাষ্ট্র, ভারত, জাপান, জার্মানি সৌরবিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদনে উল্লেখযোগ্য অগ্রগতি করেছে। আন্তর্জাতিক জ্বালানি গবেষণা প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোর তথ্য অনুযায়ী, গত কয়েক বছরে এসব দেশ ব্যাপক হারে সৌরবিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন ও স্থাপিত সক্ষমতা বাড়িয়েছে। বর্তমানে সৌরবিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদনে বিশ্বের শীর্ষ দেশ চীন। ২০২৫ সালে দেশটি প্রায় ১ হাজার ১৭৫ টেরাওয়াট-ঘণ্টা সৌরবিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন করেছে, যা বিশ্বে সর্বোচ্চ। একই সময়ে চীনের সৌরবিদ্যুতের স্থাপিত সক্ষমতা ১ টেরাওয়াট অতিক্রম করেছে। সরকারি ভর্তুকি, সাশ্রয়ী সৌর প্যানেল উৎপাদন এবং বড় বিনিয়োগের কারণে দেশটি এ খাতে আধিপত্য বজায় রেখেছে।

Only 3pc RMG factories use renewable energy: Study Only 3.0 per cent of the surveyed readymade garment factories, which mainly depend on the national grid for power supply, meet their energy requirements through renewable sources, according to a new study. And the renewable energy comes exclusively from solar panels. The majority, or 61.5 per cent, of factories' energy consumption comes from the national grid, while 35.5 per cent comes from captive power, a report by Mapped in Bangladesh (MiB) revealed. Though rooftop solar shows potential, physical limitations remain significant as only about 5.8 per cent of total floor space is currently suitable for solar installations.

Govt may allow refund of excess tax in major relief for businesses The government is considering the introduction of a refund mechanism for excess minimum tax paid by companies if the amount cannot be adjusted against future profits within a specified period – a move aimed at improving tax fairness and easing a major concern among domestic and foreign investors. Officials at the National Board of Revenue told The Business Standard that the proposal, likely to be included in the upcoming national budget, would allow business entities to claim refunds of excess minimum tax after three years if they fail to offset the amount against future taxable income.
