Bangladesh’s RMG industry continues to contribute to the global sustainability dialogue At the Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC) 2026 on 30 June, BGMEA Vice President Ms. Vidiya Amrit Khan joined an international panel discussion titled “Water–Growth Nexus: Sustaining Industrial Development in a Thirsty World.”The session, moderated by Katie Gallus and organized by the German Water Partnership, convened global policymakers, business leaders, and sustainability experts to address the critical role of water in driving resilient and sustainable industrial growth. During the discussion, Ms. Khan highlighted Bangladesh’s ongoing efforts to reduce the apparel sector’s blue water footprint, expand wastewater reuse, and accelerate cleaner production practices. She emphasized that meaningful progress is driven by practical action, increased consumer awareness, and strong collaboration among manufacturers, global brands, governments, and development partners.

বন্ধ ২১ পোশাক কারখানা চালু করতে অভিনব উদ্যোগ বন্দরনগরী চট্টগ্রামে তীব্র আর্থিক ও অবকাঠামোগত সংকটে পড়া বিজিএমইএর তালিকাভুক্ত ২১টি রুগ্ণ তৈরি পোশাক কারখানা পুনরায় চালু করতে একটি অভিনব পরিকল্পনা গ্রহণ করা হয়েছে। বন্ধ হয়ে যাওয়া সরকারি শিল্প-কারখানার অব্যবহৃত বা লিজকৃত জায়গায় মাল্টি-ফ্যাক্টরি হাব গড়ে তুলে এসব প্রতিষ্ঠানকে সেখানে স্থানান্তরের উদ্যোগ নিয়েছে বিজিএমইএ।বিজিএমইএর সাবেক প্রথম সহসভাপতি এস এম আবু তৈয়ব বলেন, ‘যেহেতু দেশের প্রধান সমুদ্রবন্দর চট্টগ্রামে অবস্থিত, সেহেতু এখানে উৎপাদন ও পরিবহন খরচ কম হওয়াই স্বাভাবিক। এ ছাড়া চট্টগ্রাম থেকে তৈরি পোশাক বিদেশে পাঠাতে বাড়তি ‘লিড টাইম’ বাঁচানোর চমৎকার সুযোগ রয়েছে। অথচ তা সত্ত্বেও বর্তমানে আন্তর্জাতিক বাজারে একটি ভুল বার্তা যাচ্ছে। যে চট্টগ্রামে নতুন নতুন পোশাক কারখানা গড়ে ওঠার কথা ছিল, তা না হয়ে অন্যান্য অঞ্চলে স্থানান্তরিত হচ্ছে। বিজিএমইএর পরিচালক রাকিবুল আলম চৌধুরী বলেন, চট্টগ্রামে যেসব অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চল গড়ে উঠছে, সেখানে স্থানীয় বিনিয়োগকারীদের জন্য সহজ ও স্বাচ্ছন্দ্যময় বিনিয়োগের সুযোগ তুলনামূলকভাবে সীমিত। অনেক ক্ষেত্রে অত্যন্ত কঠিন ও জটিল শর্ত জুড়ে দেওয়া হচ্ছে, যা স্থানীয় ব্যবসায়ীদের নিরুৎসাহ করছে। অথচ সহজ ও সহজলভ্য শর্তে জমি ও অন্যান্য সুবিধা দেওয়া হলে চট্টগ্রামে একের পর এক তৈরি পোশাক (গার্মেন্টস) কারখানা বন্ধ হয়ে যাওয়ার মতো পরিস্থিতি তৈরি হতো না।

ইপিবির পর্ষদ সভা: নতুন ক্রেতা খুঁজতে ২৭ দেশে যাচ্ছে বাংলাদেশ রপ্তানির নতুন বাজার সম্প্রসারণ, নতুন ক্রেতা খোঁজা এবং বিদেশি বিনিয়োগ আকৃষ্ট করার লক্ষ্যে চলতি অর্থবছরে বিশ্বের ২৭ দেশে অনুষ্ঠিত ৫০টি আন্তর্জাতিক বাণিজ্য মেলায় অংশ নেবে বাংলাদেশ। এ লক্ষ্যে ১২টি অগ্রাধিকারপ্রাপ্ত রপ্তানি খাত সামনে রেখে আন্তর্জাতিক বিপণন কার্যক্রম পরিচালনা করবে রপ্তানি উন্নয়ন ব্যুরো (ইপিবি)। গতকাল মঙ্গলবার রাজধানীর আগারগাঁওয়ে ইপিবির সম্মেলনকক্ষে অনুষ্ঠিত সংস্থাটির ১৪৯তম পরিচালনা পর্ষদের সভায় ২০২৬-২৭ অর্থবছরের আন্তর্জাতিক বাণিজ্য মেলার ক্যালেন্ডার অনুমোদন দেওয়া হয়। সভায় সভাপতিত্ব করেন বাণিজ্যমন্ত্রী ও ইপিবির পরিচালনা পর্ষদের চেয়ারম্যান খন্দকার আব্দুল মুক্তাদির।

Energy security tops govt's investment agenda The government has made energy security its top economic priority, pledging to ensure uninterrupted gas and electricity supplies for industries as part of a broader strategy to reduce business costs, improve competitiveness and attract investment. Mahdi Amin, Adviser to the Prime Minister and official spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), made the remarks while addressing the BAYLA Future Summit 2026, organised by the Bangladesh Apparel Youth Leaders Alliance (BAYLA) in the capital on Tuesday.The closing day of the two-day summit featured discussions on the future of Bangladesh's apparel industry, workforce transformation, data-driven decision-making, investment, finance and technological innovation. Speakers included Bangladesh Employers' Federation President Fazlee Shamim Ehsan, PwC Bangladesh Country Managing Partner Shams Zaman, former BGMEA President Faruque Hassan, along with policymakers and industry leaders.

বেসরকারি খাতের ঋণ প্রবৃদ্ধি ও বিনিয়োগ বাড়ানোর প্রধান চ্যালেঞ্জ এখন জ্বালানি সংকট পেট্রোবাংলার তথ্য এবং ব্যাংকার ও উদ্যোক্তাদের বক্তব্য অনুযায়ী, শিল্প খাতে গ্যাসের সংকট এখন আর সাময়িক সমস্যার মতো কোনো ঘটনা নয়। বরং এটি উৎপাদন, বিনিয়োগ ও রফতানি প্রতিযোগিতায় সক্ষমতার জন্য প্রধান ঝুঁকিতে পরিণত হয়েছে। চাহিদার তুলনায় প্রতিদিন এক হাজার মিলিয়ন ঘনফুটেরও বেশি গ্যাসের ঘাটতির কারণে শিল্পাঞ্চলগুলোতে গ্যাসের প্রয়োজনীয় চাপ (প্রেশার) পাওয়া যাচ্ছে না। এতে অনেক কারখানা পূর্ণ সক্ষমতায় উৎপাদন চালাতে পারছে না, কোথাও কোথাও উৎপাদন অর্ধেকে নেমে এসেছে। আর নতুন কারখানায় গ্যাসের সংযোগ একেবারেই বন্ধ।

Fewer US buyers take RMG from Bangladesh Bangladesh’s utilisation rate among US fashion companies has sharply fallen in 2026, while slow speed-to-market, limited supply chain flexibility, and compliance concerns remain major challenges though the country stays one of the world’s leading apparel sourcing destinations. According to the 2026 USFIA Benchmarking Study that covered until May, which was released on Monday, Bangladesh’s utilisation rate dropped to 78.9 per cent in 2026 from 88.2 per cent a year earlier.Utilisation rate refers to the frequency with which a sourcing destination was used divided by the total number of survey respondents. The report said that Bangladesh had tied with Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia as the most-utilised apparel sourcing destination in 2026 based on the utilisation rate.

বহুমুখী সংকটে আরও ঝুঁকি বাড়তে পারে অর্থনীতিতে অভ্যন্তরীণ পরিস্থিতি ও বৈশ্বিক সংকটে নানা চাপে দেশের অর্থনীতি। বর্তমানে ধীরগতির প্রবৃদ্ধি, ক্রমবর্ধমান দারিদ্র্য ও ব্যাংক খাতের খেলাপি ঋণে দেশের সামষ্টিক অর্থনীতি পাহাড়সম চাপে জর্জরিত। এমন এক নাজুক পরিস্থিতির মধ্যেই চলতি ২০২৬ সালে যদি স্বল্পোন্নত দেশের (এলডিসি) তালিকা থেকে বাংলাদেশের চূড়ান্ত উত্তরণ ঘটে, তবে সামগ্রিক অর্থনীতি আরও বড় ধরনের ঝুঁকির মুখে পড়তে পারে। সরকারের এক বিশেষ প্রতিবেদনে এই আশঙ্কা প্রকাশ করে বলা হয়েছে, বর্তমান পরিস্থিতিতে এলডিসি উত্তরণ দেশের অর্থনৈতিক সংকটকে আরও বেশি জটিল ও অস্থিতিশীল করে তুলতে পারে।

Besides, slow speed-to-market, limited supply chain flexibility and compliance concerns still remain major challenges despite the country's continued position as one of the world's leading apparel sourcing destinations, said a study report. Bangladesh's utilisation rate dropped to 78.9 per cent in 2026 from 88.2 per cent a year earlier, according to the '2026 USFIA Benchmarking Study' released on Monday.The USFIA study report said Bangladesh remained tied with Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia as the most-utilised apparel sourcing destination in 2026.

দেশে ভারতের বাণিজ্যে ধস ভারতের বাণিজ্য ও শিল্প দপ্তরের সর্বশেষ তথ্যানুযায়ী, ২০২১-২২ অর্থবছরে বাংলাদেশে ভারতের রপ্তানির পরিমাণ ছিল ১৬ দশমিক ১৫ বিলিয়ন মার্কিন ডলার। ২০২৫-২৬ অর্থবছর শেষে এ বাণিজ্য ১০ দশমিক ৫ বিলিয়ন ডলারে নেমে গেছে। বাণিজ্য কমেছে প্রায় ৩৪ শতাংশ। অপরদিকে শুধু গত এক বছরে ভারতে বাংলাদেশের রপ্তানি কমেছে ১১ দশমিক ৫ শতাংশ। ২০২৪-২৫ অর্থবছরে ছিল ২ বিলিয়ন ডলার, ২০২৫-২৬ অর্থবছরে তা ১ দশমিক ৭৮ বিলিয়ন ডলারে নেমে গেছে।

Businesses fear widespread harassment, corruption after NBR announces major tax inspection drive Business leaders have expressed concern after the National Board of Revenue (NBR) announced it would conduct on-site inspections of business premises and seize documents and electronic records to detect tax evasion, warning the move could increase harassment and corruption instead of boosting revenue. They urged the government to fully automate the tax system, arguing that digitalisation would reduce both tax evasion and opportunities for bribery by tax officials. In a statement issued after the NBR's announcement, the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) called for ensuring that compliant businesses are not subjected to unnecessary harassment.
