BGMEA, ASSET project review EBT progress; certificates awarded to 2,328 RMG trainees BGMEA and the World Bank-funded 'ASSET' project jointly organized a review workshop on Enterprise Based Training (EBT) progress and a certificate distribution ceremony on Saturday at the BGMEA Complex in Uttara. Under the initiative, certificates were awarded to 2,328 trainees across 97 batches from the second and third cycles of the training program. To date, the BGMEA-EBT program has enrolled 4,632 trainees across 193 batches in three completed cycles, while a fourth cycle comprising 96 batches is currently ongoing. Attending the event as the chief guest, Technical and Madrasah Education Division (TMED) Secretary Md. Dawood Miah emphasized that building a skilled workforce is indispensable for achieving national economic targets. Presiding over the ceremony, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan stated that the apparel sector must continually enhance efficiency and adopt modern practices to adapt to global market competition and technological evolution. Director General of DTE Abul Khair Md. Akkas Ali, Additional Secretary of TMED Samsur Rahman Khan, ASSET Project Director Mir Zahid Hasan, and Pro-Vice Chancellor of BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) Prof. Dr. Engr. Ayub Nabi Khan attended the event as special guests, alongside BGMEA Director Nafis-Ud-Doula and Skill Development Standing Committee Chairman Jabed Hossain Bhuiyan.

Economists question US trade deal gains after new tariff Despite signing a $3.7 billion aircraft purchase agreement and agreeing to buy higher-priced American wheat as part of its commitments under the US Agreement on Reciprocal Trade, Bangladesh has so far gained little except fresh tariffs imposed unilaterally by Washington, raising questions about the deal's effectiveness. Bangladesh now faces an additional 10% tariff over alleged forced labour, effective 24 July, while a separate US investigation into alleged excess production could expose the country to further duties. BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan said Bangladeshi exporters have yet to receive duty-free access for garments made with US cotton, despite the commitments made under the agreement. "USTR has informed us that the facility will become effective from September. The US will also determine the eligibility conditions and export volume. The concession will be available for three years," he said.

বাণিজ্য সুরক্ষায় প্রস্তুতির ঘাটতি, বাড়াতে হবে সক্ষমতা স্বল্পোন্নত দেশ (এলডিসি) থেকে উত্তরণের পর আন্তর্জাতিক বাজারে বাংলাদেশের প্রতিযোগিতা আরও কঠিন হবে। এ বাস্তবতায় অন্যায্য আমদানির বিরুদ্ধে দেশি শিল্পকে রক্ষায় অ্যান্টি-ডাম্পিং, কাউন্টারভেইলিং ও সেফগার্ড ব্যবস্থার সক্ষমতা বাড়াতে হবে। আর এ সক্ষমতা বৃদ্ধির জন্য সরকার, শিল্প খাত ও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সমন্বিত অংশীদারত্ব গড়ে তোলা জরুরি। বাংলাদেশ ট্রেড অ্যান্ড ট্যারিফ কমিশনের (বিটিটিসি) করা ‘বাণিজ্য প্রতিরক্ষা পদ্ধতি’ শীর্ষক এক প্রতিবেদনে এমন সুপারিশ করা হয়েছে। তৈরি পোশাকশিল্প মালিকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএর সভাপতি মাহমুদ হাসান খান প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, ‘যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের প্রেসিডেন্ট ডব্লিউটিওকে না মানলেও আমাদের মানতে হবে। এলডিসি উত্তরণের প্রেক্ষাপটে জাতীয় বাণিজ্য প্রতিরক্ষা কাউন্সিল গঠনসহ যেসব প্রস্তাব বা সুপারিশ এসেছে, সেগুলো খারাপ নয়। এগুলো নিয়ে আলোচনা হতে পারে।’

Sluggish RMG exports unlikely to rebound in coming months The country’s sluggish garment exports are unlikely to recover in the coming months as the war in the Gulf drives up energy costs, feeds inflation in key Western markets and leaves retailers with more unsold stock, according to exporters and major international buyers. Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury (Parvez), former president of BGMEA, said Vietnam is in a much stronger position than Bangladesh in the current global supply chain because its production costs have remained stable, it has higher value addition, and it enjoys shorter lead times to Europe and the US. Faisal Samad, a director of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said the organisation would hold roadshows in the US, Japan and South Africa over the next few months to help revive export orders. The BGMEA is also setting up a design studio to help exporters become more competitive by analysing markets, products and the latest fashion trends, he said.

যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের তুলায় উৎপাদিত পোশাক বাড়তি শুল্কের বাইরে থাকতে পারে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে প্রবেশে বাংলাদেশসহ বিভিন্ন দেশের পণ্যে নতুন যে শুল্ককাঠামো ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে তাতে মার্কিন তুলায় উৎপাদিত বাংলাদেশের তৈরি পোশাকের একটি অংশ বাড়তি শুল্ক থেকে অব্যাহতি পেতে পারে। তবে তা নির্ভর করবে তুলা আমদানির প্রবণতার ওপর। জোরপূর্বক শ্রমে উৎপাদিত পণ্য আমদানি ইস্যুতে গত বৃহস্পতিবার যুক্তরাষ্ট্র বাংলাদেশের ওপর বাড়তি ১০ শতাংশ শুল্ক আরোপ করেছে। এ বিষয়ে প্রেসিডেন্টের স্মারকে বলা হয়, বাংলাদেশ, কম্বোডিয়া, ইন্দোনেশিয়া ও মালয়েশিয়ার জন্য মার্কিন বাণিজ্য প্রতিনিধি ট্যারিফ রেট কোটা (টিআরকিউ) চালু করবেন। এর উদ্দেশ্য হবে দেশগুলোকে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের তুলা বেশি আমদানি করতে উৎসাহিত করা; যাতে তারা এমন অন্যান্য উৎসের তুলার ওপর কম নির্ভরশীল হয়, যেগুলোতে জোরপূর্বক শ্রম ব্যবহারের ঝুঁকি বেশি।

ভালো নেই দেশের অর্থনীতি দেশের অর্থনীতি ভালো নেই। সদ্য প্রকাশিত বাংলাদেশ পরিসংখ্যান ব্যুরোর (বিবিএস) তথ্যানুসারে, মোট দেশজ উৎপাদনের (জিডিপি) প্রবৃদ্ধি পর্যায়ক্রমে কমেছে। শিল্প খাতে ঋণাত্মক প্রবৃদ্ধি দেখা দিয়েছে। সরকার পরিবর্তন হয়ে নতুন সরকার এলেও দেশের ব্যবসা-বাণিজ্যে গতি আসছে না, শিল্পে বিনিয়োগ হচ্ছে না। সাবেক অন্তর্বর্তী সরকার ব্যাপক আয়োজনে বিনিয়োগ সামিট করলেও কাজে আসেনি। অর্থনীতির বিশ্লেষকরা আশঙ্কা প্রকাশ করে বলেছেন, চলতি অর্থবছরে জিডিপি প্রবৃদ্ধির লক্ষ্যমাত্রা ৬ শতাংশ নির্ধারণ করা হয়েছে, যা অর্জন সম্ভব হবে না।

BUFT hosts Sicip inauguration, certificate award ceremony & job fair BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology (BUFT) hosted the inauguration of the 3rd Intake, the certificate award ceremony for trainees of the 1st and 2nd Intakes, and a job fair under the BUFT-Sicip Program on Saturday, July 25, at the BUFT auditorium. Faruque Hassan, chairman, board of trustees, BUFT, attended the program as chief guest, while Prof Engr Ayub Nabi Khan, vice chancellor (designate) and adviser of the BUFT-Sicip Program, presided over the ceremony.

গ্যাসসংকটে বন্ধ হচ্ছে কারখানা চরম গ্যাসসংকটে দেশ। সংকটের তীব্রতায় অন্তত ৪০ শতাংশ শিল্প-কারখানা বন্ধ হয়ে গেছে। আরো বন্ধের পথে। স্থানীয় শিল্পের পাশাপাশি তৈরি পোশাকসহ বস্ত্র খাতের কারখানাগুলো চালু রাখাই এখন উদ্যোক্তাদের জন্য কঠিন হয়ে উঠছে। সময়মতো ক্রয়াদেশ পৌঁছানো নিয়ে উদ্বিগ্ন হয়ে পড়েছেন রপ্তানি খাতের শিল্পোদ্যোক্তারা। উদ্যোক্তারা বলছেন, দীর্ঘদিন থেকেই দেশে গ্যাসসংকট চলছে।তবে এক সপ্তাহ ধরে এই সংকট আরো তীব্র হয়ে উঠেছে। ফলে সক্ষমতার অর্ধেকও কারখানা চালানো যাচ্ছে না। অনেকে বাধ্য হয়ে কারখানা বন্ধ করে দিচ্ছেন, যাঁরা উৎপাদনে আছেন তাঁরা পুরো সময় কারখানা চালু রাখতে পারছেন না। এতে একদিকে পণ্যের উৎপাদন ব্যয় বেড়ে যাচ্ছে, অন্যদিকে বাধাগ্রস্ত হচ্ছে রপ্তানি আয়।
