Govt working to generate 10% electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030: Energy adviser The government is working relentlessly to generate 10% electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030, Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan said. "The adoption of rooftop solar technology in the industrial sector marks a significant step towards energy independence and sustainability for Bangladesh," he said at a workshop organised by the Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) on "Installation of industrial rooftop solar system – prospects and benefits" at BGMEA Auditorium. Michael Sumser, director, KfW Office, Dhaka and Md Anwar Hossain, administrator, BGMEA attended the event, among others.

রমজান ও গরমে লোডশেডিং হবে না: বিদ্যুৎ ও জ্বালানি উপদেষ্টা আসন্ন রমজান ও গরমে লোডশেডিং হবে না বলে জানিয়েছেন অন্তর্বর্তী সরকারের বিদ্যুৎ ও জ্বালানি উপদেষ্টা ফাওজুল কবির খান। তিনি বলেন, ‘এসির তাপমাত্রা ২৫ ডিগ্রির নিচে নামানো যাবে না। গরমে কেন স্যুট পরতে হবে? স্যুট পরে এসির তাপমাত্রা কম রাখার প্রবণতা থেকে বের হতে হবে।’ শনিবার (২২ ফেব্রুয়ারি) দুপুরে রাজধানীর উত্তরায় বাংলাদেশ পোশাক প্রস্তুতকারক ও রপ্তানিকারক সমিতি (বিজিএমইএ) ভবনে নবায়নযোগ্য বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন নিয়ে আয়োজিত সেমিনারে তিনি এসব কথা বলেন। এ সময় অফিস-আদালতে স্যুট পরে শীতাতপ-নিয়ন্ত্রিত যন্ত্রের (এসি) তাপমাত্রা কমিয়ে রাখার প্রবণতা থেকে বের হয়ে আসার পরামর্শ দিয়েছেন বিদ্যুৎ ও জ্বালানি উপদেষ্টা।

IDCOL, BGMEA hold workshop on rooftop solar systems The Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL), in collaboration with the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), hosted a workshop on ‘Installation of Industrial Rooftop Solar Systems – Prospects and Benefits’ on Saturday in the capital. The workshop aimed to promote rooftop solar technology among members of Bangladesh’s readymade garment sector. Experts highlighted that electricity generated from solar rooftops is more cost-effective than grid tariffs, and financing such projects aligns with the country’s renewable energy goals. In his speech as the chief guest, Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, adviser to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, said the government is working relentlessly to generate 10 per cent electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030.Michael Sumser, director of the KfW Office in Dhaka, and Md Anwar Hossain, administrator of the BGMEA, were also present at the event.

পণ্যভর্তি কনটেইনার খালাস না নিলে ৪ গুণ চার্জ রেলের ইঞ্জিন সংকটে কনটেইনার পাঠাতে হিমশিম খাচ্ছে চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর কর্তৃপক্ষ। এর মধ্যে নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের মধ্যে কনটেইনার খালাস না নেওয়ায় চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর ও কমলাপুর আইসিডিতে জমে আছে পণ্যভর্তি কনটেইনার। রোজার ভোগ্যপণ্য পাঠাতে এবার কাস্টম ও জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ডের সঙ্গে বৈঠক করে পণ্যভর্তি কনটেইনার খালাসে কঠোর হচ্ছে সংস্থাটি। আগামী ১০ মার্চের পর পণ্যভর্তি কনটেইনার খালাস না নিলে আমদানিকারকদের প্রতি কনটেইনারে চার গুণ হারে প্রতিদিন সর্বোচ্চ ৯৬ মার্কিন ডলার (যা বাংলাদেশি টাকায় ১১ হাজার ৬১৬ টাকা) পরিশোধ করে খালাস নিতে হবে।

Large listed RMG makers secure higher profits Most listed readymade garment (RMG) producers secured higher profits during the October-December period of this fiscal year, buoyed by global demand even amidst the myriad challenges plaguing Bangladesh's overall business climate. Companies that are relatively large, based on their export volume and capital, staged improved performances but small companies continued to struggle. Among the 40 listed companies from this sector that published the data, 25 saw higher profits while 15 saw lower profits. However, 15 companies that have been in the Z category for many years have not published any data yet.

The workshop’s objective is to promote rooftop solar technology among the members of the country’s readymade garment factory units.According to the seminar, electricity generation from solar rooftops is cheaper than that of grid tariffs, and financing such projects makes financial sense, in addition to achieving the country’s target of renewable energy-based power generation. নতুন চাপে অর্থনীতি অর্থ সংকটের কারণে সাড়ে সাত হাজার কোটি টাকা বাড়তি ব্যয় করে চাকরিজীবীদের মহার্ঘ ভাতা দিতে পারছে না অন্তর্বর্তী সরকার। বিদেশে চামড়া ও তৈরি পোশাক রপ্তানির প্রণোদনাও আটকে গেছে তহবিল সংকটে। সরকার পরিচালনার জন্য যে অর্থ প্রয়োজন তার পুরোটাই আসে রাজস্ব খাত থেকে। সেখানে আয় আশানুরূপ নয় উলটো আরও কমেছে। এই সংকটের সময় জুনের আগে মিলছে না আইএমএফের ঋণের কিস্তি। যদিও মার্চে পাওয়ার কথা ছিল। সরকারের আয় সীমিত থাকলেও লক্ষ্যমাত্রার চেয়ে নতুন করে বাড়তি ব্যয় গুনতে হচ্ছে বিদ্যুৎ, সার, খাদ্য ও এলএনজি খাতের ভর্তুকিতে। লক্ষ্যমাত্রার চেয়ে বেড়েছে বৈদেশিক ঋণ ও সুদ পরিশোধ ব্যয়ও। সবমিলে অর্থনীতি নতুন করে চাপের মুখে পড়ছে।

Urgent actions needed to reverse our industrial growth Bangladesh's industrial sector is at a critical crossroads, with a sharp slowdown in growth. Recent reports indicate that the growth rate for the 2023-24 fiscal year dropped by 4.86% compared to the previous year. This stagnation stems from several interconnected issues: rising energy costs, a shrinking dollar supply, escalating interest rates, political instability, labor unrest, and increased production costs. The depreciation of the taka has further compounded these challenges, creating an unstable environment for industries to thrive. The situation is worsening. Production is stagnant, and entrepreneurs are reluctant to invest, leaving the industrial sector in a vulnerable state. Without new investments, industries are not expanding or modernizing, which could lead to long-term economic consequences.

NBR begins pre-budget discussions with stakeholders today The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is set to commence pre-budget discussions today with stakeholders in Dhaka. A senior NBR official told the Daily Sun on Saturday that the revenue board will hold a pre-budget meeting with the Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO) and the Newspaper Owners Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) at 3pm on Sunday at the NBR conference room in Agargaon. The official further stated that the NBR will gradually engage with businesses, trade bodies, and chamber representatives in Dhaka as part of the consultation process.To facilitate this process, the NBR has requested various chambers and associations to submit their budget proposals in written form to the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) by 20 March, 2025. Additionally, interested stakeholders are encouraged to send a soft copy of their proposals via email to nbrbudget2025@gmail.com.
