Can Bangladesh ride out the wave of US tariffs? The global trading system, largely unchanged for a century, got a rude awakening on April 2 when US President Donald Trump slapped massive tariffs on imports into his country. The move sent shockwaves through world markets -- because when America sneezes, the global economy catches a cold. "It's an opportunity if we can play our cards right. It's a disaster if we don't engage in meaningful economic diplomacy," said Rubana Huq, a former president of BGMEA. "Everything will depend on strong diplomatic moves. Above all, we must connect with the key personnel in the Trump administration, who in this case is Scott Bessent, who has been entrusted by Trump to deal with individual countries. Strategic alignments are needed besides committing to more imports and removal of non-trade barriers," Huq said."Let's remember that Vietnam, in spite of reaching out to Trump at the very beginning, is now being viewed as an adversary of the US administration just because there are discourses on regional interests, which have just started in Asia.

RMG exports: Traditional markets drive 10.84% YoY rise in July-March of FY25 Bangladesh's readymade garment (RMG) exports posted a robust 10.84% year-on-year growth during the July-March period of FY2024–25, reaching $30.25 billion, according to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). "This growth reflects the resilience of our industry, especially in traditional markets," said Faruque Hassan, former president of BGMEA. "Our factories are investing in innovation, sustainability, and efficiency, which is giving buyers the confidence to increase their orders. We are also benefiting from global sourcing shifts, especially as brands look to diversify away from China," he said.

RMG exports grew 10.84pc in July-March The country’s readymade garment exports witnessed a healthy growth of 10.84 per cent during the July-March period of the current financial year fetching $30.25 billion that highlights the resilience and potentials of the apparel sector. This was revealed since the Export Promotion Bureau recently published the country-wise export data for the July-March period of the financial year 2024-25.The data revealed that the European Union continues to be a pivotal market, which represented 49.82 per cent of Bangladesh’s total RMG exports, with a total value of $15.07 billion.

ভারত থেকে স্থলপথে সুতা আমদানির অস্পস্টতা দূর করতে নতুন প্রজ্ঞাপন ভারতের সুতা আমদানি বন্ধের প্রজ্ঞাপনের নতুন ব্যাখ্যা দিয়েছে জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড (এনবিআর)। এনবিআরের নতুন ব্যাখ্যা অনুসারে, গত ১৩ এপ্রিল বা এর আগে ভারত থেকে স্থলপথে সুতা আমদানির জন্য যাঁরা ঋণপত্র খুলেছেন, তাঁরা আগের মতো স্থলবন্দর দিয়ে ওই সুতার চালান খালাস করতে পারবেন। এমনকি ১৩ এপ্রিল বা এর আগে যাঁরা এ–সংক্রান্ত ঋণপত্র সংশোধন করেছেন, তাঁরাও একই সুবিধা পাবেন। বুধবার এনবিআর এ–সংক্রান্ত আদেশ জারি করেছে।আগে গত ১৩ এপ্রিল আরেক প্রজ্ঞাপনে বেনাপোল, ভোমরা, সোনামসজিদ, বাংলাবান্ধা, বুড়িমারী স্থলবন্দর দিয়ে সুতা আমদানির সুবিধা বাতিল করেছে এনবিআর। যাঁরা ১৩ এপ্রিল বা এর আগে ঋণপত্র খুলেছিলেন, তাঁরা কী করবেন—এ নিয়ে মাঠপর্যায়ের অস্পষ্টতা দূর করতে নতুন ব্যাখ্যা দিল এনবিআরের শুল্ক বিভাগ।

Bangladesh seeks to boost air cargo capacity after India ends transshipment Following India's decision to revoke the transshipment facility for Bangladeshi exports, the interim government is accelerating efforts to strengthen independent air cargo operations and sustain export momentum. The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has stepped up plans to expand cargo capacity, including introducing dedicated cargo flights from Sylhet's Osmani International Airport and bolstering manpower at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

নেদারল্যান্ডসে চলছে ‘বেস্ট অব বাংলাদেশ ইন ইউরোপ’ প্রদর্শনী নেদারল্যান্ডসের আমস্টারডামে চলছে দুই দিনব্যাপী ‘বেস্ট অব বাংলাদেশ ইন ইউরোপ’ শীর্ষক প্রদর্শনী। আমস্টারডাম বেয়ার্স ভ্যান বারলেজে গতকাল বৃহস্পতিবার স্থানীয় সময় সকালে এই আয়োজনের আনুষ্ঠানিক সূচনা হয়। বাংলাদেশি পণ্য ও সেবা বিদেশি ক্রেতাদের সামনে তুলে ধরা এবং বিদেশি ক্রেতা প্রতিষ্ঠানের সঙ্গে সংযোগ স্থাপন ছাড়াও বাংলাদেশের বিনিয়োগ সম্ভাবনার আন্তর্জাতিক পর্যায়ে তুলে ধরাই বেস্ট অব বাংলাদেশ ইন ইউরোপের মূল উদ্দেশ্য। আমস্টারডামে দ্বিতীয়বারের মতো এই আয়োজন করছে বাংলাদেশ অ্যাপারেল এক্সচেঞ্জ (বিএই)। এবারের আয়োজনে সহযোগী হিসেবে রয়েছে পিডিএস লিমিটেড, সিটি ব্যাংক পিএলসি, বাংলাদেশ ও কেডিএস গ্রুপ। বাংলাদেশ সরকারের পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয় ও বাংলাদেশ বিনিয়োগ উন্নয়ন কর্তৃপক্ষও (বিডা) এই সম্মেলন ও প্রদর্শনী আয়োজনে সহায়তা করছে।

দ্বিমুখী অবস্থানে ব্যবসায়ীরা সপ্তাহখানেক আগে জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড স্থলপথ দিয়ে ভারত থেকে সুতা আমদানি বন্ধে প্রজ্ঞাপন জরি করে। মূলত দেশীয় বস্ত্রকল মালিকদের সংগঠন বাংলাদেশ টেক্সটাইল মিলস অ্যাসোসিয়েশনের দাবির পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে সরকার এ সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়। তবে সরকারের এ সিদ্ধান্তের পর থেকে এর পক্ষে-বিপক্ষে আলোচনা হচ্ছে। বিশেষ করে এ ইস্যুকে ঘিরে বস্ত্র মিলমালিক ও তৈরি পোশাক উৎপাদন ও রফতানিকারকরা দ্বিমুখী অবস্থান নিয়েছেন। বস্ত্র মিলমালিকরা বলছেন, সরকারের এ সিদ্ধান্তে ক্ষতির হাত থেকে বাঁচবে দেশীয় বস্ত্রকলগুলো। আর পোশাক রফতানিকারকরা বলছেন, এমনিতেই মার্কিন শুল্কারোপসহ নানা রকম সংকটের মধ্য দিয়ে যেতে হচ্ছে পোশাক খাত, এর মধ্যে সরকারের এ সিদ্ধান্তে বিপর্যয় নামবে দেশের প্রধান রফতানি আয় অর্জনকারী এ খাতে।

সংকটেও পোশাক রপ্তানি বাড়ছে শ্রমিক আন্দোলন, কারখানা বন্ধ, অর্ডার বাতিল হওয়া, কারখানার মালিক পলাতক, যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের শুল্ক আরোপসহ নানা সংকটেও পোশাক রপ্তানি বাড়ছে। ২০২৪-২৫ অর্থবছরের জুলাই-মার্চ সময়কালে ৯ মাসে বাংলাদেশের তৈরি পোশাক (আরএমজি) রপ্তানি আগের বছরের একই সময়ের তুলনায় ১০ দশমিক ৮৪ শতাংশ বেড়ে ৩০ দশমিক ২৫ বিলিয়ন ডলারে উন্নীত হয়েছে। পুরোনো বাজারগুলো পোশাক রপ্তানি বাড়ার ক্ষেত্রে বড় ভূমিকা রেখেছে। অপ্রচলিত বাজারেও পোশাক রপ্তানি দিন দিন বাড়ছে। রপ্তানি উন্নয়ন ব্যুরোর (ইপিবি) ও বাংলাদেশ পোশাক প্রস্তুতকারক ও রপ্তানিকারক সমিতি (বিজিএমইএ) সূত্রে এ তথ্য জানা যায়।

However, its implementation hinges on the US first accepting key Russian demands. If enacted, the deal could resolve complex issues like Rooppur loan repayments for Bangladesh, as well as lower food, fertiliser, and fuel prices.Experts said the Black Sea ceasefire would ease Bangladesh's trade with the warring nations, cutting freight costs. With both sides agreeing in principle to spare each other's energy infrastructure, fuel prices are expected to drop, dragging down LNG, coal, food, and fertiliser prices — saving foreign currency and boosting Bangladesh's economy.
