'That was not a meeting with BGMEA,' clarifies its president after deputy press secretary’s remark BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan has clarified that his recent presence at a government meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus did not constitute a formal meeting of the trade organisation with the interim government head."That was not a meeting with the BGMEA," Mahmud told The Business Standard today (29 October), following a statement by Chief Adviser's Deputy Press Secretary Azad Majumder that rejected the BGMEA chief's claim made yesterday that they could not get an appointment with Yunus for four months. "That was a meeting only on LDC graduation issues, including all stakeholders, mostly government officials," Mahmud said. He added that BGMEA seeks an appointment with the chief adviser to discuss issues of the readymade garment sector and other export-oriented industries.

জমি লিজে ভ্যাট অব্যাহতি চায় বিজিএমইএ ভারত, থাইল্যান্ড, ভিয়েতনামসহ প্রতিযোগী দেশগুলোতে শিল্প খাতের জমি লিজের ওপর কোনো মূল্য সংযোজন কর (ভ্যাট) নেই। তবে ভ্যাট আইন অনুযায়ী, দেশে ২ শতাংশ ভ্যাট দিতে হয়। প্রতিযোগিতা সক্ষমতায় পিছিয়ে পড়ে আগ্রহ হারাতে পারেন নতুন বিনিয়োগকারীরা। তাই জাতীয় বিশেষ অর্থনৈতিক অঞ্চলে জমি লিজ বা হস্তান্তরের মূল্যের ওপর ভ্যাট অব্যাহতি চায় বিজিএমইএ। সম্প্রতি জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ডের (এনবিআর) চেয়ারম্যান মো. আবদুর রহমান খানের কাছে পাঠানো এক চিঠিতে এ বিষয় তুলে ধরেছেন বিজিএমইএ সভাপতি মাহমুদ হাসান খান। চিঠিতে বলা হয়েছে, ভ্যাট অব্যাহতি সংক্রান্ত প্রজ্ঞাপনের মাধ্যমে নিবন্ধিত প্রতিষ্ঠানের কারখানা ভাড়ার সেবায় অব্যাহতি দেওয়া হয়েছে। অর্থাৎ কোনো শিল্পপ্রতিষ্ঠান কারখানা ভাড়া নিলে তার ওপর ভ্যাট দিতে হয় না। তাই শিল্পপ্রতিষ্ঠানের কারখানার ক্ষেত্রে ভ্যাট অব্যাহতি দেওয়া যৌক্তিক।

BGMEA seeks govt help for swift insurance claim settlement The country's readymade garment (RMG) sector has urged the government to intervene to ensure prompt settlement and payment of insurance claims following the devastating fire at the import cargo village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA). In a recent letter to the Financial Institutions Division (FID) under the Ministry of Finance, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said a significant quantity of imported raw materials belonging to garment factories was burnt to ashes in the October 18 blaze. The industry group said the affected factories have suffered major financial losses, with their ongoing export orders now at risk -- orders whose value is many times higher than the burnt imported goods. The BGMEA requested the FID to immediately instruct insurance companies to expedite the settlement of submitted claims and release the funds necessary for factories to complete their pending export shipments.

বর্ধিত ট্যারিফ নিয়ে ব্যবসায়ীদের সাথে বৈঠক করবে বন্দর কর্তৃপক্ষ চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরের বর্ধিত ট্যারিফ ইস্যুতে আলোর রেখা দেখা দিয়েছে। ব্যবসায়ী নেতৃবৃন্দের সাথে আলোচনায় বসছে চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর কর্তৃপক্ষ। আগামী ১৫ থেকে ২০ দিনের মধ্যে উভয় পক্ষের মধ্যে মিটিং হবে এবং সেই আলোচনায় নির্ধারিত হবে খাত ভিত্তিক ট্যারিফ। বুধবার (২৯ অক্টোবর) পোর্ট ইউজার্স ফোরামের প্রেসিডেন্ট ও চিটাগাং চেম্বারের সাবেক প্রেসিডেন্ট আমীর হুমায়ুন মাহমুদ চৌধুরী ব্যবসায়ীদের সমাবেশে একথা বলেন। সমাবেশে বিজিএমইএর পরিচালক এমএ সালাম বলেন, চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরের বর্ধিত ট্যারিফ নিয়ে আমরা সোচ্চার ছিলাম। আজ একটা ফলপ্রসু আলোচনার পথে যাচ্ছে বন্দরের বর্ধিত ট্যারিফ।

Ctg port likely to get operator by December Shipping adviser retired Brigadier General M Sakhawat Hussain said on Wednesday that the interim government was going to appoint an operator to the Chattogram port, but not giving the port itself to anyone. He said that they had already completed several steps and procedures to that end so that the whole process for appointing the operator was completed by December.‘The port is not being given to anyone. An operator will be appointed for its management,’ adviser Sakhawat said while responding to queries from reporters at a seminar on ‘Navigating the Blue Economy: Ocean Resources Management in Bangladesh’. The Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies organised the seminar at its auditorium in the capital Dhaka. The adviser said that the process of appointing an operator began five years back, but none had raised any protest against it.

আলোচনার মাধ্যমে চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরের যৌক্তিক মাশুল নির্ধারণের দাবি ব্যবসায়ীদের চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর ব্যবহারকারীদের সঙ্গে আলোচনার মাধ্যমে যৌক্তিক ও বাস্তবসম্মত মাশুল নির্ধারণের দাবি মেনে নিতে সরকারের প্রতি আহ্বান জানিয়েছেন পোর্ট ইউজার্স ফোরামের আহ্বায়ক আমীর হুমায়ুন মাহমুদ চৌধুরী। নগরীর সিটি হলে পোর্ট ইউজার্স ফোরামের এক সভায় তিনি এ আহ্বান জানান। চট্টগ্রামের বাণিজ্যিক প্রসারে প্রতিবন্ধক ওজন স্কেল, বন্দর ট্যারিফ ও চট্টগ্রাম চেম্বারকে জবাবদিহিমূলক ও ব্যবসায়ীবান্ধব করার প্রত্যয়ে এ মতবিনিময় সভার আয়োজন করে পোর্ট ইউজার্স ফোরাম। ১৫ অক্টোবর চট্টগ্রাম বন্দর তাদের বিভিন্ন ধরনের সেবার বিপরীতে নতুন মাশুল কার্যকর করে। তাতে একলাফে গড়ে ৪১ শতাংশ অতিরিক্ত মাশুল আরোপ করা হয়। এ নিয়ে পোর্ট ইউজার্স ফোরাম আন্দোলনের ডাক দেয়। কর্মসূচিও পালন করা হয় ফোরামের ব্যানারে। পোশাকশিল্পের মালিকদের সংগঠন বিজিএমইএর পরিচালক এম এ সালাম বলেন, চট্টগ্রাম বন্দরের বর্ধিত ট্যারিফ নিয়ে এ ফোরাম সোচ্চার ছিল। ব্যবসার নানা সমস্যা সমাধানে চট্টগ্রাম চেম্বারে গতিশীল নেতৃত্ব দরকার।
