Pressure mounts on RMG exports to the EU
Bangladesh’s ready-made garment exports to the European Union came under notable pressure in November 2025, posting a sharp year-on-year decline amid weak consumer demand and intense competition from rival sourcing countries. According to Eurostat data, Bangladesh’s RMG exports to the EU fell to 1.37 billion euros in November 2025, down from 1.54 billion euros in November 2024, marking a sharp 10.87 per cent decline.Mohiuddin Rubel, former director of BGMEA, said that European markets remained unpredictable and sluggish due to inflation and shifts in buying patterns. He also said that the country’s internal political situation has further weakened business confidence, disrupting normal trade flows. ‘The risk of supply-chain disruptions has increased, making timely delivery of goods more challenging, and in such an environment, both local and foreign investors are delaying investment decisions,’ he added.

Accessories eye $5b direct export in three years
Bangladesh's garment and other accessories industry is emerging as a formidable export powerhouse, with direct exports doubling over the last three years and stakeholders projecting a rise to $5 billion within the next three years if policy barriers are removed. According to the Bangladesh Garment Accessories and Packaging Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGAPMEA), the sector contributed $7.45 billion to national exports in the 2024-25 fiscal year. Bangladesh's garment exports to Europe exceed €18 billion, growing over 7.5 per cent
According to the latest Eurostat data for the period of January to November 2025, the EU's total apparel imports grew by 3.93 per cent, reaching a total value of €82.94 billion. While the market saw a robust 11.60 per cent increase in volume, the average unit price for garments fell by 6.88 per cent, signaling a highly competitive, price-sensitive environment for global suppliers. "The data reflects a complex environment where volume is up, but margins are being squeezed," noted Mohiuddin Rubel, Managing Director of Bangladesh Apparel Exchange Ltd. "While Bangladesh remains a key player, the aggressive pricing strategies from competitors like China and the recent dip in November figures suggest that staying competitive will require a careful balance of volume and value-addition," he said.
