The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) will work together to improve the health status of garment workers in Bangladesh, positively impacting their lives.

In this regard, BGMEA and GAIN signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at BGMEA Complex in Dhaka on 4 January.

Faruque Hassan, President of BGMEA, and Dr. Rudaba Khondker, Country Director of GAIN inked the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations.

BGMEA First Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam, Vice President Rakibul Alam Chowdhury, Directors Abdullah Hil Rakib, Md. Imranur Rahman, A.M. Shafiul Karim (Khokon), Md. Hassan (Jacky), and Mohammed Meraj-E-Mostafa (Kaisar) and Moniruzzaman Bipul, Portfolio Lead, Drivers of Food Systems Change, GAIN, and G.M. Reza Sumon, Project Manager, GAIN and other officials were present on the occasion.

As per the MoU, BGMEA and GAIN will collaborate to create a space for advocating an enabling environment for ensuring appropriate nutrition for the RMG workers.

They will provide technical guidance to strengthen institutional capacity of the National Workforce Nutrition Alliance for scaling up the nutrition activities for workers’ wellbeing.

Both sides will also collaborate to create collective approaches and mechanisms to improve workers' access to affordable nutritious and safe food through establishing Fair Price Shop (FPS) in RMG factories.

They will work together to provide nutrition services and micronutrient supplementation to workers from various formal and informal sectors. 

This partnership between BGMEA and GAIN intends to improve the nutritional status of RMG workers in Bangladesh that will ultimately contribute to achieving the goal of the 2nd National Plan of Action for Nutrition (NPAN2), as well as fulfilling United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals, SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 3 (Health and Wellbeing), SGD 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).
