BGMEA and PSES signs MoU to improve factories environmental performance:
BGMEA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PSES, a project of the governments of Bangladesh and Germany, implemented by GIZ, to improve environmental performance of garment factories.
Reaz Bin Mahmood, Vice President (Finance) BGMEA, and Magnus Schmid, Program Coordinator of PSES, signed the MoU on behalf of their respective organizations.
Under the MoU, BGMEA will cooperate with PSES, GIZ to improve the environmental performance of BGMEA’s 2nd tier factories.
The cooperation will be implemented under the banner of “TREES” (Toward Resource Efficiency and Environmental Sustainability), an initiative of BGMEA to promote cleaner production practices among its member factories and encourage them to adopt eco-friendly technologies.
With this joint initiative BGMEA and PSES aim to make existing knowledge and best practices of BGMEA members with 1st tier factories accessible to members that wish to improve their environmental performance.
Initially, 16 factories from 2 clusters shall be assessed and supported in using resources more efficiently. While the term “resource efficiency” comprises of many environmental aspects, improvement recommendations will be tailored according to the needs of each participating factory and can include measures such as energy savings, improved chemical management, operation of waste water treatment plants. This shall happen on a mentorship-based approach.
The initiative aims to support those factories that have not been participating in any improvement project with development partners.
