BGMEA and Walmart discuss safety and business potential

A meeting between BGMEA and Walmart, the world’s largest retail chain took place on December 11, 2019 at The Westin, Dhaka. 

The discussion was mainly about industry issues which also includes safety and business potential. Building on what has been achieved so far, they have committed to work on the challenges to continue the growth rate and sustainability of the sector.
Moreover, safety issues for the workers were also discussed, which was one of the main concerns.
Rubana Huq, BGMEA President, Sharif Zahir, Director, BGMEA, Faisal Samad, Senior Vice President, BGMEA, Paul Dyck, Vice President, Global Public Policy and Government Affairs, Sarah F. Thorn, Senior Director, Global Government Affairs, Sridevi Kalavakolanu, Senior Director, Responsible Sourcing Compliance, Karen Stuckey, Senior Vice President, Private Brands, General Merchandise, Jeff D. Rice, Vice President, Responsible Sourcing Compliance, Rita Lohani, Director, Bangladesh Hub Lead- Director, Operational and Administration, Venkatesh Mallan, Director Responsible Sourcing were present in the meeting.
Walmart Inc. is an American multinational retail corporation and 30 percent of Bangladesh's garments exports to the US went to Walmart. With last year's sales at $401 billion, Walmart employs more than 2.1 million associates worldwide, according to the company.
