The RMG industry needs policy support from the government to sustain its growth and reach the target of US$50 billion in apparel exports, BGMEA President Md. Siddiqur Rahman said at a press conference on 14 May.
BGMEA organized the press conference to brief the media about the overall situation of the RMG industry of Bangladesh. BGMEA Senior Vice President Faruque Hassan, Vice President SM Mannan (Kochi), Vice President (Finance) Mohammed Nasir, Vice President  Mahmud Hasan Khan (Babu), Vice PresidentFerdousPervesBivon and BGMEA Directors were also present on the occasion.
BGMEA President Md. Siddiqur Rahman said that the RMG industry has registered 10 percent growth in the first 10 months (July-April) of the current fiscal years, which indicates the turning around of the sector.
He said that presently the industry is facing a number of challenges, including fall in apparel prices in the global market, increase in production cost, factory remediation, depreciation of US dollar against taka, high bank interest rate, and gas and electricity problems.
The BGMEA President sought policy support from the government to address the challenges and move the industry forward. He urged the government to pay special attention to the RMG industry while preparing the upcoming national budget.
