The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) expresses deep concern over misleading and sensationalized headlines circulating in recent media reports, in the wake of the tragic fire incident in Mirpur.
BGMEA expresses its condolences over the tragic loss of lives, prays for the eternal peace of the departed souls and for the swift recovery of those injured.
According to Fire Service and law enforcement agencies, the fire originated in a chemical warehouse. Toxic fumes and smoke from the explosion spread to nearby establishments, tragically claiming lives.
The affected facilities are not members of BGMEA, nor affiliated with any recognized industry association, nor covered under the RMG Sustainability Council (RSC). These units are therefore not part of the formal, export-oriented readymade garment (RMG) industry in Bangladesh.
We request DIFE and relevant authorities to ensure that due diligence is maintained across all industries to upholding the highest standards of compliance, for the greater interest of both our industries and nation’s reputation. Particularly, we urge the government to take firm enforcement measures to ensure that no illegal facilities or warehouses operate outside regulatory oversight.

Acting President
