Call for Uninterrupted Energy Supply in RMG Sector

BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan met on 13 April 2026 with the Hon’ble Minister of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, MP, and the Hon’ble State Minister, Mr. Anindya Islam Amit, MP, at the ministry, seeking support to resolve the ongoing gas and electricity crisis and to promote renewable energy in order to sustain production in the ready-made garment (RMG) sector. He was accompanied by BGMEA First Vice President Salim Rahman and Vice President (Finance) Mijanur Rahman. Energy Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam was also present at the meeting.

During the discussion, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan stated that due to inadequate gas and electricity supply, factories are currently experiencing a 25–30% decline in production capacity. He noted that in major industrial zones like Gazipur and Ashulia, insufficient diesel supply for generators amid load shedding is severely disrupting production and shipment schedules. Additionally, the energy crisis has led to increased raw material prices and higher transportation costs, raising overall production expenses.

In response, the BGMEA delegation presented several key proposals to address the crisis, including:

🔵 Emergency Fuel Supply: Ensure rapid diesel supply to garment factories from filling stations under special arrangements.

🔵 Gas Connection & Equitable Distribution: Provide urgent gas connections, especially for small and medium industries (with boiler capacity of 300–500 kg), and ensure fair gas distribution across all industrial zones surrounding Dhaka.

🔵 Infrastructure Development & Automation: Install at least two additional FSRUs promptly and simplify the process of installing EVC meters in the industrial sector.

🔵 Reduction of Duties & Taxes: Withdraw all import and consumer-level taxes and VAT on imported fuel to reduce production costs and ease the government’s subsidy burden.

To support environmentally sustainable industrialization, BGMEA also proposed reducing the existing high duties (28.73% to 61.80%) on essential equipment such as solar panels, inverters, DC cables, and BESS to 1%.

The Hon’ble Minister and State Minister attentively considered the proposals and assured necessary measures to resolve the crisis, acknowledging the RMG sector’s vital contribution to the national economy. They also approved BGMEA’s proposed format to facilitate urgent diesel supply from nearby filling stations.
