Reviving state-owned textile mills can meet RMG sector’s demand for local fabrics

Chairman of Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation (BTMC) Brigadier General Md. Zakir Hossain paid a courtesy call on BGMEA President Faruque Hassan at BGMEA’s PR office in Gulshan, Dhaka on 06 October, 2021.

They discussed different issues related to the apparel and textile industry of Bangladesh, especially the importance and prospect of reviving the state-owned textile mills through Public-private partnership (PPP).

Faruque Hassan said the demand for local fabrics and yarn is rising in the ready-made garment industry of Bangladesh. Moreover, the RMG sector is increasingly focusing on garment items made from non-cotton fibre, which can be supplied by local textile mills.

If the closed mills are reopened, they will be able to cater to the rising demand for local yarn and fabrics in the RMG industry.

Besides, rejuvenating the failing mills will create opportunity for more employment in the country, he opined.
